There are softwares that do the work, but what is it good for if you don't really know what the software is doing? If you can't find the key by yourself I believe you won't be able to use it well to. Theory and ears, that's the best way. :cool:
You can do what AlChuck said in Sonar too. Just enable your soundcard to record everything that is playing, then arm an audio track and play the midi one. ;)
That means: I don't like to use external effects. I prefer recording a clean sound and process the effects on my computer, even if I have 0.5ms latency, because it sounds better and I can change the effects at any time I want.

Yeah, I could see that, but as you may know, many "newbies" that come to this forum are looking for recording, gear, software tips. Many of them don't compose. I guess that in the Songwriting forum you'd have a bigger audience. ;)
