did you use star-grounding? That is all the grounds go to one place together (all the wires make a nice start shape) and then goes to ground from that single location, that can really help avoid ground loops. That and shjeilding can help, but the hum you speak if is not unusual for single...

my 335 copy had an access plate on the back. What i did was: pulled off the knob tied a string to the end (wire actually). Took off the nut pulled it out, bringing hte string with did my replacement, tied the string to the pole of the new pot pulled it back through. hope it helps at all Daav
