    Ampex MM-1000 Story...

Actually I'd much rather have a 2" block than a space shuttle :D Hope it works out ok. Due to the crazy premium people can put on an ad for heads with with a report, the best way to buy seems to be to pay bottom dollar on an old worn head that can still be lapped. You spend another few hunny...

Just got a Tascam 488 mkII!

What you need depends on how you want to record those things, but generally the 488 is pretty inclusive. You have a mixer with four preamps (if I recall correctly) already built in so no worry there. You'll want some 99% isopropyl alcohol and wood or at least paper stick swabs to keep the...

You got a retired space shuttle, didn't you Cory? Gonna need a LOT more Deoxit and wood stick swabs for that one...

    Track order

If you have 3 guitar tracks, especially if they're all pretty saturated with distortion, that sure can take up plenty of room in the mix. In that case, summing a mono drum track panned down the middle certainly makes sense. No rule drums have to be in stereo, especially in rock, though not sure...

That's not over the top, it's prudent! You've been so meticulous with cleaning up the rest of the machine, it makes sense to do this too! Lemony fresh sure beats 40 years of storage must and tobacco-y studio stank. I don't relish having to work with those harnesses. Makes me think of...

Looking to recap my old R2R

Theoretically, I'd expect the act of re-capping alone to make a bigger difference than 20uf. Keep in mind those old caps are probably out of spec, so the old caps on one side most likely won't compare to the new caps on the other side even if replacing with the save value. If it were me I'd...

LOL how about two reels of [it doesn't actually look like] "new old stock" GP9 for six hundred and fifty bones!? Box of 2 QUANTEGY GP9 REEL TO REEL TAPE 2" x 2500' x 10.5 | eBay Good grief, you can get two reels of for-realsies new, sealed RMGI SM900 for less than that and you can actually get...

    Recording Digital, transferring to tape

What are you using for a digital interface? Avoid the 1/4" mic jacs on the tape deck, those will not properly accept the line level signal you're feeding it.

Looking to recap my old R2R

+1 on what's been said, resistors are usually pretty stable and long-lasting. You're probably ok replacing the 200uf 10v and 15v caps with 220uf/16v or 220uf/25v. Like Cory says, you'll have loads of options there. On a side note, check a schematic to see whether you're dealing with polar...

Looking to recap my old R2R

Hm, sound like you'll want to replace that disemboweled cap anyway! As for the bad channel, I don't know these machines and I'm certainly not a pro tech (though I've serviced our MCI console and tape machine quite a bit and I'm about 3/4 of the way through recapping the console (several...

Wow, I missed your vid a page or two back. Man, it's GREAT to see that puppy lit up and hear it clicking and working! Can't wait to hear what it does with a nice reel of tape :D

    What's the deal.

This, and of course what's also missing in this discussion is operating level. Pro deck standard audio ref levels are +4dBu while consumer electronics are down at -10dBv. Audio connections on consumer/prosumer decks are generally RCA unbalanced type to interface with the same level of small...

Looking to recap my old R2R

It's going to depend some on what types and values of caps are in your unit--various mfr's model ranges feature certain values and can styles--and as a general rule, it's a good bet to go for low-impedance/ESR, high temp caps. For common electrolytics I personally like Panasonic, especially the...

    Soundcraft Spirit or Outboard EQ

Well, great rack EQs don't come cheap (four figure price tags), so as you've found, you'll have to get a little inventive or look for sleepers. Something else to check out...DBX 242, Orban designed if I recall correctly.

    Soundcraft Spirit or Outboard EQ

Off the top of my head, the Spirits only have a swept mid, right? Seems like a bit far to go for a band of semi-para mid especially if you're happy with your 200 otherwise, and you may find the Spirit a bit more sonically pedestrian than your 200, though I haven't a/b'd them. Have you...
