Old guy needs direction. . .

Agreed on the Roland unit being worth considering; however, to be clear here, they're not all the same sort of thing. The DP-24 and VS-1680 are both all in one digital workstations; the HD-24 is a standalone hard disk recorder with basic editing, no mixer/signal processing like the other two have.

Old guy needs direction. . .

I bought mine new about 8 years ago for somewhere around 1700 if I recall correctly. They retain their value fairly well as far as discontinued digital gear goes; the XR version with the upgraded converters goes for a bit more but it seems like the market value for used standard models is...

Old guy needs direction. . .

PC DAW's party piece is the deep editing, and to a lesser extent the non-destructive recording if capturing solid takes all the way through is a problem (I look at that as a talent issue but that's for another discussion). The suggestion that people should apply a gazillion plugs and use...

Just as well that you were busy the week tape ADATs were hip :D I don't have much experience with the Tascam DP-24 but I have a suspicion that you may find its ergonomics a turnoff, though it would be preferable to a home computer-based DAW. I've used the Alesis HD-24 quite a bit; I still...

High noise in audio sent OUT from Allen & Heath to laptop mic port

LOL :D I'd be surprised if the laptop didn't have a line input for the built in audio, though.

High noise in audio sent OUT from Allen & Heath to laptop mic port

Hard to say without knowing more about your setup, but at the very least you have a level mismatch. You should not be using the mic input on your laptop but rather a line level input. Try that and see what happens.

    Buying tape...

Beck, my friend, this is why I suggest newbs just stay away from Ampex entirely ;) ;) Yes run, don't walk from that reel of junk! As for how many reels, it depends on what speed you're recording at (15ips eats tape twice as fast as 7.5ips), how long your 8 songs are and whether you're...

I need an opinion on which setup to use...

And how! I'm not unknown to whip up a 20+ channel mix off 8-track. Mults and effect returns pile up quick :D

    Buying tape...

Yeah I know that but we get these threads all the time and it seems to just incite confusion when we start qualifying it with "actually there were a few years in the mid-90s that were ok but..." There's only so much of that stuff floating around the market anyway, may as well leave it for the...

    Buying tape...

probably best to stick with current production tape which is ATR or RMGI. Be advised that ATR appears to have let a bad batch out, two reels of which I have had the displeasure to deal with. I will NOT try ATR again until I can get a handle on how to identify the bad batch and don't...

    1/4" or 1/2" masters?

2-track 1/4" is the most common for mixdowns, but some mastering engineers have 1/2" 2-track capability too. The JH-110 is a very good machine especially in 1/2" 2tk, you don't see those a tone, but if it hasn't been gone through recently it will more than likely need the usual MCI...

    Recording "hot".

LOL right, so watch a ProTools channel meter for a while and tell me how much you want to trust it ;) In any event, the argument is fruitful for the OP in that it underscores the importance of meter ballistics in judging how to handle signal level.

    Recording "hot".

But in the real world of recording, it's entirely possible to clip transient peaks when a dig. meter is showing -6dBfs, source depending...

    Recording "hot".

It's kind of a loaded question, but occasional creative use notwithstanding, generally you want to keep the levels hitting no hotter than 0VU. Tape is forgiving and you can get away with the odd peak a little above that but keep in mind that solid state electronics in particular are not so...
