will a TRS(M) - Dual 1/4th Patch cable work to connect my mixer to monitors??

Your mixer outputs and monitor inputs both use 1/4" TRS. You simply need two balanced cables with male 1/4" TRS connectors on both ends. An insert cable is for a different purpose entirely and not the correct cable for the job. The difference with an insert cable is that it's wired with one...

Tascam MSR16 - How to align the heads

The head alignment procedure will be different for different decks, and I'm not sure what the MSR16's manual is like but I would imagine they'd have hte procedure in there? For my MCI heads, it involves adjusting set screws on the heads to get the optimal relationship between the tape and...

Ignorant Question: Is this Tape wound backward?

The shiny, lighter brown side of the tape is the side that gets recorded and should be facing against the heads. The duller, darker side should be facing out. If I'm reading your post correctly, it sounds like the previous owner spooled the tape "tails out" which is a good idea as it helps...

Solutions for tape dropout and distortion

The distortion you're kinda stuck with, nothing you could do would be more than a band-aid at best. Either your Ramsa preamp overloaded, or the tape electronics did. Watch the meter on your machine on playback, assuming the levels are calibrated correctly, if the meter pins then you clipped...

    3M M64 Halftrack

This forum needs a Facebook-style "like" button. I like this! ;) Funny about the little details, like I couldn't help thinking that the side-facing heads must be somewhat more awkward to clean and de-mag compared to traditional front-facing stacks.

    Qaulity reel to reel tapes

Using the search feature will find you lots of good info so please definitely do that, but there are two companies manufacturing new tape currently: ATR Magnetics and RMGI. ATR makes one formula which you can calibrate to pretty much whatever you want up to +10; some hit it at +6 though I...

    a good cd editing software

This IS an analog forum, you know ;) but...at any rate, your subject asks about editing and your post requests burning software; what is it you need to do and what didn't you like about those other programs?

FS: Bellari VP-129 tube phono stage

OK, BUMP! Time to move this barely-used Bellari on! It was a spare unit and has pent most of its time in its box in my closet! At the asking price of $175 I will include Priority Mail 2-3 day shipping to USA lower 48 as well as the PayPal fee and I will also throw in an upgrade JJ...

    Dedicated phono preamp or no?

The broadcast consoles I used (Audioarts/Wheatstone, Arrakis) had them built into dedicated stereo phono channels.

    Dedicated phono preamp or no?

Yes, as sr71 says, perhaps your turntable has the RIAA built in if it's a late-model, lower end unit as they'recommonly putting in the stages and sometimes digital converters with USB outs too; otherwise you'll need a box with the RIAA and line level outputs. I'm trying to think of a phono...

    Noisy mixing desk

It really depends on what sort of noises you're hearing. If it's just good old fashioned noise floor/hiss, I doubt a cleaning would do a lot. I'd be thinking more about replacing the power supply capacitors. If your gain controls have a scratchy sound when you turn them, then cleaning may...

    Some analog tape deck history...

Man, what a BEAUTY! Stephens 2" 16, now there's a deck I'm sure I'd love working on! No way is it 100lbs though :D

been a good week for cassette finds

Cool! I'm sure they're fine but I couldn't work out if they're SA tape in an alternate package and length or if they were TDK's cheaper high bias tapes or what. Beck, sounds like some good finds for sure, nice price on the SA90s, about what I got the 60s for. I went back today and picked up...

been a good week for cassette finds

I was at the local hardware store the other day. They have a corner that's like a little time capsule of old media. I nabbed the last 2-pack of TDK SA 60mins for $2.49. Also grabbed a 2-pack of TDK "CDing-II" 74mins for the same price. These both look to be late 90's era. I might go back...

    FT: Peluso 22 47 for a 22 251

Hi all, I'm interested in trading my Peluso 22 47 (the original shortbody with the 6072A glass tube) for a 22 251. The 22 47 is a very nice mic but I also have a 251 and would like a pair of 251s! Since these mics use the same supplies, cables and mounts as far as I know, it would be an...

Recording instructor says it's impossible to oversaturate tape

I'm thinking this fellow probably doesn't hit tape. That being said, pro tape machine electronics have pretty good headroom although it's certainly possible to clip if you hit them too hard. Maybe what he's suggesting is that you'll get the electronics distorting before you get nasty artifacts...
