    Important Tape Calibration Question

Woops, you misunderstand me. I DO NOT use ProTools in place of an MRL tape, that doesn't work. I use ProTools ONLY as a multichannel tone generator, nothing else! Literally I just have some channels set up with a tone generator plugin on each track that I can mute and unmute depending on what...

    Important Tape Calibration Question

I either use the one built into my console which is nice, I can do frequency sweeps, pink and white noise with it, or (I hate to admit it :D ) I also have a multi-channel calibration tone session on ProTools that I can easily patch into the tape inputs.

    Important Tape Calibration Question

The way to do it is to calibrate your repro with the MRL, then set bias and calibrate your record electronics with the oscillator tones, then when it's all calibrated you print your cal tones to the first minute or two of tape. For my machines I do 1khz, 10khz, 100hz. BTW I just bought a 1/4"...

    Important Tape Calibration Question

Do you print calibration tones before you record? If so you should be able to cal to those for reproduction. If not, well...

Are they any factories in the USA making recording tape anymore??

Seriously? Ouch! In the US, the price difference is nominal. ATR costs maybe 10% more than RMGI here, not a big difference. Anyway, in summary, If you want the modern equivalent to 499 which is a super high output tape tape, look at ATR Magnetics or RMGI SM900 which are modern super high...

Are they any factories in the USA making recording tape anymore??

Nonsense, ATR works fine at +6, though you get a little higher noise floor of course. ATR runs quiet in my experience and you can get away with +6. It's not like the analog world will end if you run a tape a few dB below what it's optimized for. ATR also claims a broad bias tolerance as well...

Are they any factories in the USA making recording tape anymore??

I assumed that if his machine can handle 499, ATR should be ok too at least as far as biasing yeah?

Are they any factories in the USA making recording tape anymore??

I haven't had excessive shedding probs with 499 either, or GP9. I found that you do have to a little excess off the GP9 with a couple fast wind passes, but that's the worst of it. I've given ATR a second chance after my first experience turned out to be a bad batch, but the replacement only...

Are they any factories in the USA making recording tape anymore??

Aack, stupid smartphone! That is to say i HIT it at +9 on my machine. I don't know why they're slathering so much oxide on there, in my view it would be the best tape out there if it ran cleaner. Your mileage may vary! Maybe it runs cleaner for some people. By they way unless you're really...

Are they any factories in the USA making recording tape anymore??

It's apparently normal for this stuff. It's considered a +10.5 tape and there's plenty of extra oxide too run off. It's pretty quiet stuff so can be set up for +6 too. i hot it at

Are they any factories in the USA making recording tape anymore??

ATR Megnetics indeed. They have a bunch of dealers, just google it and you'll have all the options laid out in front of you. You can also buy direct from them if you like. ATR is excellent sounding tape, like, really good, but it does run quite dirty on my 1" machine, I suggest getting some...

    BIAS question

Weird prob if you can't find the peak even after bringing the rec level almost all the way down, am I reading that right? I have occasionally had to bring the rec level down on certain channels to get more VU range while biasing for +9 on my machines, but never a prob like yours where I could...

How do you get recordings on 1/4 tape onto vinyl?

Ouch, that hurts! ;) If a band can't even afford a mid-level studio in their region that has a tape machine or two, it might be time to up their game a bit, stop playing for bar tabs and pizzas for one thing lol! It's not like you have to go to Ocean Way or Blackbird to make a good record...

How do you get recordings on 1/4 tape onto vinyl?

Not necessarily, it doesn't have to be that much more expensive than digital recording, there's a new generation of analog-friendly engineers popping up (of which I admittedly am one, so there's my bias) and when you market this method as being an organic showcase of the artist's talent, you'll...

How do you get recordings on 1/4 tape onto vinyl?

You'd rather digital mixdowns got turned straight into mp3's instead of vinyl!? Lesser of evils, lesser of evils! ;-) The record I was talking about was at least hand mixed on a console, and the 150g vinyl really made up for being mixed down to digital. Kinda gained back what it lost in the...

How do you get recordings on 1/4 tape onto vinyl?

You would need to find a mastering engineer with a cutting lathe and have them cut it for you, then it's off to the pressing plant for manufacturing. Pressing plants will usually also do the cutting for you as part of a pressing package. My last clients who released on vinyl used United Record...

Pitfalls of low-budget acoustic guitar recording

How is your gain-staging? You're not just cranking your levels too hot, are you? I have never known any Behringer mixer to have much headroom, you have to be pretty conservative with your settings or things will get ugly.

NAD 5120 noise and panning problems

Sounds like a pretty common grounding problem, do you not have the ground wire connected to your phono amp? Any number of things could cause a level imbalance from your speakers. Are they placed symmetrically in your room and are you sitting symmetrically between them? If no, that could...
