Do bands notate their songs using composition software?

Yeah, that's what I figured. I really want to get proficient at using Sibelius or Finale though. Hmm, I guess MIDI is a form of notation...I guess I mean in a classical sense, like the five line staff and treble and bass clefs.

Do bands notate their songs using composition software?

I think I have problems with just writing down what the chord progression is. Usually I'll forget exactly how something sounded when I played it on guitar or piano--the rhythm, dynamics, etc. I'm so used to reading music from a sheet that I get a vague sense that my practicing lacks...

Free piano vsts ~= digital piano quality?

Would you say that MDA piano is about equivalent to the piano sound you would find on something like a Casio Privia? Would you say MDA piano is superior to 4Front's piano module?

MIDI drum tracks - effect of different key board weights?

Would you recommend the Trigger Finger for someone starting to use drum pads? It's pretty intuitive, right? Or I think if I do get one I'll get the Korg padKontrol, since it comes with so much extra software.

MIDI drum tracks - effect of different key board weights?

Is aftertouch mainly a feature used with pads? I'm currently using an Alesis Micron to double as a synth and MIDI controller. Am I at a disadvantage for not having something like an M-Audio Axiom that has drum pads in terms of the control you have over creating drum patterns?

Acoustic guitar fret buzz on 1st three frets

Yeah, I think sometime soon, I'll take it back to see what the guitar shop can do to fix the buzz. I don't mind having the frets being harder to press down; the buzz bothers me more. I've noticed that around the seventh fret, the intonation's a little out of whack, and I don't think it's because...

Acoustic guitar fret buzz on 1st three frets

Thanks for the info. I took a look at my fingerboard. It still looks straight to me. Do you have to get a $500+ acoustic guitar to avoid fret buzz when flatpicking the lower three strings really loudly? I got my action lowered because I couldn't fret the F barre cleanly--but that was with...

Acoustic guitar fret buzz on 1st three frets

I don't know if my action is too low. I'm not supposed to get a little fret buzz when playing the bottom three strings loudly, right? Would using higher gauge strings help?

    Nickel wound vs. bronze phosphor?

Yeah...turns out I accidentally put electric strings on an acoustic. The guitar store lady assumed I meant electric guitar strings when I said "guitar strings." Is it bad for my acoustic guitar? This is the second time in a row. The first time I put on D'Addario nickel wound super lights, this...

Can nonsense be meaningful or is it just filler?

Haha, yeah, I guess my topic didn't really make sense. It's just that I have trouble figuring out Pavement songs...and wondering if Stephen Malkmus really knows why he chose the words he did or if it was just random neurons firing in the brain. I think I'm overcritical if the words don't make...

    Nickel wound vs. bronze phosphor?

I'm currently using D'Addario regular light gauge xl nickel wound strings for my acoustic guitar on my Norman B18, which is cedar and rosewood. Is nickel wound mostly used on electrics guitars? The other brands I've used so far are DR and Martin SP--I think both of them were bronze. What I've...

EQ'ing individual drums in Cubase 4 LE

Actually, I was talking about MIDI. I'm using my Micron as the MIDI controller for the 909 VST drumset.

EQ'ing individual drums in Cubase 4 LE

Never mind, I think I just need to read more about MIDI routing.

EQ'ing individual drums in Cubase 4 LE

I'm currently using the 909 kit. Is there a way I can EQ each drum instead of trying to EQ the entire kit? I tried dissolving the part, then trying to edit each drum, but it didn't work.

Can nonsense be meaningful or is it just filler?

How important do you think a song's meaning really is? A lot of people call Pavement and Beck nonsense lyricists, but I'd say there is a sizable amount of really meaningful stuff scattered throughout each song. Maybe it's like how some people say they can only write a verse and chorus and find...

    2 Quick writing questions

Definitely agree with the in bursts part. Today I could only come up with three lines for the first verse. I'm starting to focus on getting a good melody first. I used to do things simultaneously, but now I figure the melody's going to be the most memorable part. I also find it easier to come up...

What are drum pads on a MIDI controller for?

Are they mostly for live performance, being able to trigger drum patterns on the fly, or do they have importance in recording also? Is there some sort of special programming you can do with it? I currently just use the drum editor in Cubase with my Alesis Micron...I don't know if there's a more...

Hey, Did you check out Chad VanGaalen yet? If you haven't, you should check out his music video for the song that got me hooked: http://youtube.com/watch?v=58rP44NSNNs Probably his most popular. Definitely my favorite, at least. A lot of people say he reminds them of Neil Young, especially...

Recommendations for free drum machine vsts?

I've tried Cubase LE's LM7, but it doesn't have a lot of variation of the kinds of sounds you can make. The main ones I've heard of are Drumatic and Loopazoid. Also, do I need a MIDI controller that has drum pads like the M-Audio Axiom? Man, I wish I'd kept my 61-key Axiom instead of selling...

    Better to start out simple?

I'm finding that having to use a computer for recording is taking away from my inspiration. I'm not sure if it's the fact that it's a hassle when I need to move all my stuff when I record piano or if it's just that I've run out of song ideas. I wish I started out with a really basic analog...
