There's LOTS of threads on this subject already. It is a VERY subjective subject. Your best bet is to go with the person you are going to be recording (easy if it is you!) and TRY some mics in the store. You may find that the SM58/57 dynamic is the best for the person, or that the Rode NT1...
The conventional wisdom on the board is that the Mackie VLZ preamps are quite good and the 1202 mixer will give you a multi-pack of them. It will add a great deal of flexibility to your setup, too.
I use the 1604 (original version) which has the earlier preamps and I'm happy with them. The...
That would seem to me that you definitely need a preamp and then make sure that you are going from the line out of the preamp into the LINE IN of the soundcard. What is the soundcard?
I use Cubase 5 and I don't have any hiss or fuzz (well, except when a singer sings too close to the sm58 -...
Here's a stupid question regarding panning, then. I'm recording a singer/songwriter/guitarist...
I've been mostly keeping the voice and the guitar on top of each other, but occasionally panning each slightly to one side. It seems to me that if I pan more extreme then that, it sounds bizarre -...
I was hoping someone else answered this before I attempted to give a response, but here goes. DISCLAIMER : When I was actually dealing with live stuff, I was not handling the gear. Now that I *AM* a gear head, I'm doing studio stuff only (well, a bit of coffee house live stuff, but that's...
In case anyone is interested, I did exactly as described above with a Behringer Ultrapatch bay (Behringer haters can now say YUCK) and it works WONDERFULLY. It is BEAUTIFUL. SOOOOO convenient.
Nice.
I LIKE IT.
Me happy.
Of course, I'm sure I'd be happier if I used a soldered patchpanel...
Argh. I can't believe I am posting here.
I too think Alan's presence here is worthwhile - he's starting to get the swing of this thing and he's actually talking about mics, which seems to be a nice change.
Everyone knows who the hell he is... fine, we'll take what he says with a grain of...
Just wanna put my $0.02 in - I have an like the Ultragain as well. I've mostly used it to do recording directly to DAT when using room mics for jam nights, but it has worked very well for that
Generally I pair it with a coupla APEX 420s (which I'm also very happy with)
Closest I've ever done was with a high school jazz choir (acapella as well) that was about 25 people... they had a mic (handheld) for each 2 people, which seemed to work well, but scaling that up to your size would require a hell of a lot of mics!
You could probably get away with a couple of...
More info needed :
So you'll be doing quartets? So only 4 singers? Or all 72?
How big of venue? Are you background or not?
Do you have a sound guy or will you be doing it as you sing?
To expand - the pre-amp does just that, it brings the tiny signal from the microphones and brings it up to an appropriate level for recording. Most pre-amps also can be used for guitar (at least accoustic, I doubt you'd get the sound you want from an electric, but I'm not an guitar player), but...
What you are looking for is called a "pre-amp"
Probably (since you have a stereo (and thus two input)) line in on the SB, you want a two-channel preamp.
I've got (and like) the Behringer dual preamp, but most people around here will steer you differently. You're probably look at about another...
The "with the occasional backup yelp" line just about caused me to spit fruit punch on my keyboard. Thanks
I think each option has its advantages - separate bits means you can upgrade each as your needs change (for instance, changing mixers as you need more inputs), but I think the "powered...
Hey, Blue Bear - do they ever let you out of the studio or do you really have to sit in it "24/7 365" - I guess you get one day off every leap year :)
Teacher - you can ignore everything I say, I'm just a hobbiest. Though, if I were you, I'd listen to everyone, accumulate all the knowledges...
Yeah... that is more or less what I'm doing now, but with only 4 inputs and 8 possible sound sources I'm having to repatch fairly often.
Thanks for the comment, though
Ok, so I'm smoking along now, love the sound I'm getting (I need to get permission from the artists to post some stuff here) but I am starting to feel I've got too much chaos, that might be answerable by a patchbay.
I've got an original Mackie 1604 mixer, a delta-66 and I record and monitor...
I was using N-track and really liked it, but had stability problems. I said the hell with it and picked up Cubase VST 5.0 last weekend and am NOT sorry. Rock solid on my system (PII 550, 512 MB RAM, Delta 66, Win2000).
I've recorded a couple of songs in it since and it is just sweet...
That's where my wiring experience is from too, Brian - well, data networking anyways.
I have to say - I HATE pulling cable... glad I don't do that anymore. Well, much (I spent most of yesterday afternoon pulling cable, but that was the first time in months)
