CONTEST THREAD - who is worthy?

Ok, we had a snow day so I recorded this with my son. It was a good exercise. Couple of things - the tune has always reminded me of a stalker/heartbreak song, despite its tempo. I never really liked the album version, but I always loved the Budokan (sp?) "live" version. Anyway, I did it...

    Got some new equipment

I think when the guitars get "heavy," they thin out a lot. That's my biggest criticism. I am no expert at getting thick sounding beefy electric sounds, but it seems that sometimes using less distortion can actually make them heavier. If the thinness is an effect that you're going for, you...

CONTEST THREAD - who is worthy?

Well now you're throwing all these RULES in, lol. I'd consider taking a stab at "I Want You To Want Me," but only if you want me to want to. And then there's like even odds that I'll flake out totally and not post again for 3 years, but I'll try.

I'd love to witness that as well!

CONTEST THREAD - who is worthy?

You are absolutely correct, I assume. When it comes to the Stones, I confess to being like a shitty music critiquer claiming that "all blues sounds the same." I'm not a fan of the blues, so it does sound the same to me. I love Exile on Mainstreet. The remainder of their catalog sounds like...

CONTEST THREAD - who is worthy?

I think Whip is a perfectly good choice - my only issue is that it's basically a 2 chord song that's like 5 minutes long, and if you change tempo much, it's going to push it into REALLY LONG territory. As only a moderate Stones fan, I always wondered why they put that song and Shattered on the...

    Arrested for driving while blind

Your lead tone is perfect. The end is fucking weird, but that's not a negative thing for a song that's been blasted all over Texas radio for 40 years. That last one is a good mix, I think. Sounds like you spread the drums out a bit, but maybe the guitar panning is just helping it seem wider...

CONTEST THREAD - who is worthy?

You guys should do Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me." That song can be done straight, or gay. Big guitars or dobros and acoustics. Normal tempo or 3/4 speed. You can even go from major to minor to really fuck it up. That's a trainwreck I'd love to witness.

    "No Air Nowhere"...Say that 10 times fast...:D

It feels like the vocals and the top end of the kit are slightly out front...makes it come across as more crispy than it should. Very articulate mix - honestly, I think maybe the bass just needs to be turned up. Nice work.

    acoustic guitars - name brand

Yeah, that. I think most guitar players recognize that for a lot of guitars, once you get over about $2,000, the differences are going to be less related to sonics and more related to the amount of labor and inlay (i.e., more labor) that goes into these things. I had a rare event happen in our...

    mixing vocals with piano

Try cutting the piano track with EQ between 1K-3K a little. If that doesn't make them play nice, then keep moving your eq cuts until it sounds better. If you haven't compressed the vocal, that is often done to make the vocal more discernible.

    noob mixing question

You shouldn't be making an album of mp3's, but setting that aside for the moment, your real question is sort of about mastering. What many people do is play their mixes and compare them with a commercial song and make sure the volume levels are comparable. If not, then the home recordist...

    why people build studios

I just bought a really expensive house in a quiet neighborhood, because I can afford to do that. And when I'm recording, I tell everybody in the house to stfu...and then I beat them if they aren't silent. My wife forgot once and slammed a microwave door. She had a hard time explaining 2 black...

Best way to record an EP for a rock band

He means if the players can play well together, then that might be a good approach. But if the players cannot even make individual tracks flow together when they're recording them one at a time, then good luck.

    Audiobook EQ & Mastering

I'm getting some "plosives" on monitors. Not bad, but noticeable. If you haven't rolled off everything below 100Hz, you should. 12 seconds is your first example.

    Vintage sound requires special equipment?

No, you don't need vintage gear to make clean recordings...and frankly, I think it would be moronic to spend thousands on vintage gear when you don't even know what mic to use on your instruments. My philosophy is that home recordists should outgrow the gear they have before moving up. Get...
