Is it the person behind the equipement?

A good recording will make mixing really easy. A good mix will make mastering really easy. So yeah, if you get a good recording it won't need much.

    Question about 703 and RockWool

It's simply compressed loft insulation, so treat it as such. It's an irritant (can irritate skin, throat and eyes) but isn't carcinogenic. Just wear gloves and a mask.

They have almost no affect on acoustics. Nothing helpful anyway. What it is however is a fire hazard! Rip it down and make some rigid fiberglass panels or install some acoustic foam (proper stuff, like auralex). They will have a significant effect and won't be dangerous.

    me want record! Seriously

It is usually close enough... I've done this before without problems. However, that was years ago, before I seriously got into recording. Might as well give it a go... If it doesn't work, you could get a better interface.

    me want record! Seriously

Without buying anything, other than maybe a 2 phono to mini jack cable, you could easily get get these 4 tracks onto your pc. Simply take the output of the 4-track into the line in of your pc. Pan tracks 1&2 left and right and mute tracks 3&4 on your 4-track. Record these and then repeat for...

How to: Mix a song from beginning to end

I think this thread would be better suited to the newbies section. Although I don't like much of what he did in the mix, it could help newbies.

Soundproofing my basement studio isolation booth

The standard walls will be your strongest link before you sort the door, floor and ceiling. I understand 8'x8' being easy to build, but it is bad acoustically.

Soundproofing my basement studio isolation booth

Thick/double doors. Make sure it's all sealed properly (caulked and door seals). Staggered studs/double walls. What did you do for the floor and ceiling? Why did you make it 8'x8'? Square rooms are bad acoustically. Cubes are even worse.

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Well the overheads were only very very slightly out of phase for the snare but it didn't bother me when I was mixing. I don't think it matters a great deal unless it's really bad.

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Just drag it into phase if you really want it in phase. However, it might not be a huge issue. That was my point btw, that even the flipped phase snare was out of phase!

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Haha, well that's why I was making the argument. The solo'd snare sounded thin, the snare in the overheads sounded fatter but still nothing like your snare, so I was arguing that yours doesn't sound "right", but it sounds better.

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

An in phase sound would sound like the snare mic on its own with a bit of overheads. The solo'd snare sound does sound quite thin. But yeah, I was just trying to say that "problems" are sometimes beneficial.

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

Sometimes "mistakes" can sound good. I believe that yours is out of phase. The original is out of phase, but sounds closer to what it should sound that your reversed phase snare. I'm not arguing against the fact that yours sound good however. :D

Greg_L mix contest/clinic/critique - just for shits and grins

True Not always. In fact I used gates on toms with a lot of dry left in, meaning there was only a slight reduction of bleed. I doesn't really make any audible difference bypassing these gates. I didn't EQ these drums at all. It's more important to get the sound you want at the start. They seemed...
