    Preamp help?

Some do some don't. No preamp will "color" the sound like that cheap pc soundcard you are using, though. Erockrazor gave good advice. Spend $80-$150 on a decent prosumer Soundcard (M-Audio Audiophile, e.g.) and your recordings will get 400% better. And yes, then get a decent preamp like the...

Best Buy - Giving GC/MF a run for the money?

The BB in Temecula has had music gear for about a year now. I've only been there once. It made me feel silly just walking in there. At lest both GC and BB have a 110% price guarantee. So, with a little patience and effort, you can get yourself an additional 10% off of items they both stock...

    Acoustic recommendation?

Point for point, this is the best advice you will ever receive. And it is exactly how in 2002 I ended up my Webber OM (which I was unfamiliar with at the time) instead of a Santa Cruz OM PW, Charles Fox SJ, or other guit in the same price range at the time. IMO the Webber was just better. I...

    Acoustic recommendation?

I've always liked the Larrivee 03 series better than the Taylor or Martin offerings in the same price range. Very, very nice solid wood guits.

home recorder wondering if mixer or preamp is way to go

Well, the preamps you have are pretty decent. I have the Audiobuddy's big brother, the DMP3, but I suspect all three preamps, including the Yammy are in the same league. The Rode NT2A is also supposed to be a pretty decent mic. What are you using for AD/DA conversion. If you don't like the...

Which would you prefer for your fretboard: Maple, Ebony, or Rosewood?

Ebony on my acoustics. But I agree with the sentiment that you should let the tone and feel decide for you. I've never chosen a guitar because of what it was made of.

    Keith Moon

Moon's style was perfect for that band and the music they created and played. His playing was one of the main musical elements that expressed the frenetic angst that defined the Who's music. Without him behind the kit, 40 years later when that particular band is mentioned, most people, young...

    Mixing an acoustic guitar

This is all good advice IMO. Depending on the sound you want, XY near the 12th or 14th fret or neck joint will usually get it done without a whole lot of fuss. Backing the mic up to 18" - 24" will give you more of the room if that's what you want, but it will never sound as forward or focused...

    Rode Nt-5 vs. Oktava Mk-012?

I can't speak for the newer 603s, or on overheads, but I have an older one and also a MK012. They sound very similar. Harvey feels the same way. On acou guit the 603s is a little brighter but also can get a little boomy on bass if not placed properly. My acou guit, a Webber OM, is a...

Harvey Reid - Archibald MacDonald of Keppoch

That's a bummer, Foo. I have several of his albums but not that one. Have you tried contacting him to see if he can shoot you an mp3 or something? He's a pretty cool guy...I bet he would do it if he could. Just tell him your story. It never hurts to ask. Good luck, I couldn't turn up...
