Recording with vintage equipment -Please Help-

You don't need much MIDI. If the drum machine is any good as a MIDI clock, drum machine MIDI out to JV, and jv out and thru to the computer

    Recording keyboards direct into interface

Ya, I had to use the fone jack when I got a stereo cassette in '72. Just be aware that some fone out can supply enough wattage to power speakers. The cheap-ass surface mount circuits in the cheap keyboard and interface are probably a decent match - meaning a safe bet as long as you don't crank...

    Recording keyboards direct into interface

There will be a level control on fones 90=pct of the time. Not too long ago, I needed a extra 3.5 stereo out at this computer and stuck a 6.3 to 3.5 adapter in the tape decks headphone jack and grabbed the dupe signal from there. There is some power(wattage) on that jack compared to the surface...

    Recording keyboards direct into interface

No, it is a "OK" solution. No one uses the headphone jack when line out is available. Cheap is taking away your headphones when you want to record. Don't you deserve headphones and output jacks ?

    Controlling volume on free synths

I'm just saying that the hardest part of independent VST/i is the graphic : ) Screen shot of Synth1, Synthmaster, and z3. I like the new download, too, but get something with some meat. Synthmaster on sale is a good offering for something like $70 on sale

    Recording keyboards direct into interface

No, it is not line level. Line will have much higher resistance on the in and out. Headphone is, generally, low power and with very low resistance. They is too cheap to include line jacks, and/or, there is no room

    Controlling volume on free synths

" Wonder how the designers thought people would be controlling them"? I wouldn't expect a fully developed product for free
