I am just looking for some opinions on if I can get a nice drum sound with my small collection of cheap mics, and also some tips on how to approach the set up.
My best mic is probably my SM57 I was going to use this on the snare..Top?
I was thinking about buying a a Sennhiser E602(not sure if...
If your only recording vocals I would avoid a miniDisc recorder. The MiniDisc recorders use a nasty file compression called ATRAC Adaptive Transform Acoustic coding? I think thats what it stands for but anyways with that sort of compression (Not the good kind of compression this compression...
Does anyone actually still use a PC by choice?
Macs are expensive so are PCs but you can build a Blazing fast PC for half the cost you could buy one in a store for. There is not such an option for Macs.
This is what I would do with $2400.
Build a new PC (Macs rule but that would kill the budget) Building a good PC is sometimes easier then buying one and usaually about half the cost.
Buy Digi001 (I am a pro tools guy)
Spend the rest on Mics
Yes a vocoder is what you need.
You just use an import source most people use a keyboard but other things produce some fun results as well.
check this out. This place rocks.

I don't understand what you mean by good sound from MIDI (MIDI IS NOT AUDIO)
If the Alesis unit has a MIDI in and a MIDI out you get the sounds of the alesis unit.
With midi you will have more control in your recording software (If you don't use software to record midi will not be any help...
When a previous poster noted that with Built in pre amps you get noise and distortion he/she was right on. You are getting noise and distortion but its not crazy fuzz box type distortion the best way to understand this is to be in nice studio with a great singer. The difference is night and...
I though the MR-8 was a sort of a porta studio 8-track? If you are using Computer software you would not need it just record in the software you will get a lot more then 8-tracks
If your looking to do a lot of MIDI work I would recomend MOTU's Digital Performer but getting the interface and...
I like the idea to set my price at the price of the 10% gear they don't have but I probably won't need to buy anything, I could actually probably do their recording with my equipment alone but then they would feel that their PT rig is wasted.
I will probably go with a flat rate per song because...
PRO TOOLS 6.1!! yeah
The new Pro Tools 6.1 has a function called rewire that is made for just that function.
It allows you to easily improt Reason (2.5 only I would guess) into PT 6.1 while both programs are running so you can still tweek your stuff in reason while working in PT
I don't use...
I don't know what I am talking about but here it goes!
Think back how original flanging was done: slowing down one of two synced tape machines.
If you duplicate the track and select each bar of the duplicate track and slow it down slightly you might be able to create a natural flange.
If you...
I am sure everyone is sick of this question but no one knows where I live so here it goes.
Farily common situation: Band buys pro tools rig because they want to save money and record their own album. After a few failed attempts the realize why engineers get paid so much?
The band talked to...
any style is fine just not death metal. my plan was just to find a drummer and send them samples of a bunch of different songs in different styles and let the drummer decide.
I can manage to do vocals bass and guitar but can never get a pro drum sound using MIDI.
I am really want to try doing a song with a drummer over the internet.
Anyone have any experience in this???
I think it would be a good thing to get familiar with.
So if there are any interested...
I am not familiar with your particular programs but I will try to get you on the right track.
First find the program that will enable you to add a new MIDI device. You should be able to find your specific keyboard if not set up a genaric device and make sure its able to receive and transmit on...
I have learn Digital Preformer at school but have Pro Tools LE 6.01 at home. In DP there is a function called Split Notes it makes it possible to pull out all or some of the notes and paste them to individual track. I cannot find a way to do this easily in pro tools it seems to only pull out...
