    Converting Workshop Into Studio Questions?

leave it all one room; chopping it up will make it really, really small in a hurry, and if youa re mostly recording yourself, it will jsut make it inconvenient to duplicate controls etc. a second layer of drywall is probably the most effective (cost/time/labor) thing to do as far as sound...

    advice on acoustics needed

styrene = fire hazard rigid fiberglass is the best thing to absorb sound, if not that then mineral wool either of which are far less flammable than styrene. I've built a room within a room pocket studio - 6 months of research, 3 months of construction and there are still things I did not quite...

    Soundcraft 200B!

you have a nice mixer: I have a 16 channel 200, the friend has a 24 and another 16. Sounds good. I'm using mine with 2 motu 2408s, very happy, much too high quality for my poor musicianship. you got a pretty good deal. Nice part about these mixers is the modular construction - you have to pay a...

do these have any use in the studio?

sure, they usually have pretty good absorption capacity. they also usually have some screw sockets you can put a eyebolt into, and use chains to hang from the ceiling, etc. We had a bunch in the studio I used to be associated with. did a pretty good job killing reflections and if you angle them...

Need help building soundproof studio for husband

Hi Danielle, Welcome to the forum! If you are intent on building him a little project studio, you'll need to do fair bit of research to make it work out nice. This is an okay place to get advice, some otehr places are John Sayers recording forum adn the harmony-central recording forum. I'm not...

Saxophonist Needs Practice Room in Basement

you're probably right, I was just armchair quarterbacking on the 2" thing. ----- it's a total pain in the ass working around stuff, my whole basement is full of pipes, off level floors, jogs in the walls, ledge around the edge where it goes from brick to stone. I started in August 2005 and...

    Where T.F. is the G.D. 703!?

just a mention - acoustic ceiling tiles are often made out of rigid fiberglass. peel off the vinyl facing and stack them up - voila!, 703-equivalent panels. available every-frickin-where. cheers C>

Saxophonist Needs Practice Room in Basement

4 inches.. well, you could put 2" deep cut-down 2X4s, 12 spacing, and hang them with deck hardware.... be a lot of work, but so is sistering the overhead joists. I (in my very, very, limited experience) would bet that hanging the ceiling from your new walls & the foundation walls will beat...

Going door shopping...solid core wood, right?

my two cents: metal is probably ok as long as it is completely foam or wood filled. i'd just be concerned that any voids in it might possibly resonate, probably not really an issue, if you're playing that loud, then you will be heard regardless of the door. 2 doors is better than one imho...

    Modifications for corners?

I meant filling it with 703 & covering it with cloth - letting it soak up sound instead of reflecting like gypsum is going to. You could still add your power outlets, jsut frame in around them. Most (some?) people here are scratching for every little bit of space to add acoustic modifications...

    first mix...advice?

sounds pretty good, the panning hard right on the one guitar I would lessen a little bit. needs just a touch touch more bass in it, but very very nice overall. I'm nearly unable to offer criticism. nice tune, too. cheers C>

    Modifications for corners?

Why don't you just fill it with 703? seems like it would be easier/cheaper/cleaner possibly more helpful than just losing the space. just a thought. C.

Saxophonist Needs Practice Room in Basement

I don't know... I didn't take the time to research/acquire suspended channel. I gave up almost 5 inches of head room to get my ceiling, I think(hope) it was well worth it. I had plaster/lathes on the original ceiling, plus heating pipes going through my space. I kept the heating pipes (big money...
