Recording acoustic guitar, 2 mic configuration. One nice SDC, the other???

I agree, in principle. I guess I just come from that wing of recording in which experiments with sound will sometimes net a more interesting sound than the standard fare. I don't use any set-up exclusively.

Recording acoustic guitar, 2 mic configuration. One nice SDC, the other???

Something I've done a few times, with what I thought was a good result, was to have two mics recording the acoustic guitar as well as the guitar's pick-up plugged in, plus, a bottletop pick up stuck somewhere on the guitar. Then, once all four sources were recorded, pan till it felt right...

Recording acoustic guitar, 2 mic configuration. One nice SDC, the other???

I've said this many a time, but for me, as long as the acoustic guitar sounds like an acoustic guitar, and as long as it isn't warbling or wobbling, then I'm fine with it. I've used so many different combinations of mics and positions ¬¬>> 2 SDCs, an SDC and a LDC, 2 dynamics, one dynamic, one...

Is it possible to get a good sounding song without using any EQ or Compression relying on Volume Balancing alone ? ( indie rock)

I don't really have a levels philosophy. Every song is different and every song has different variables, even where there might be similar instrumentation. Sometimes, I most certainly do want an instrument that isn't soloing noticed, but this is dependent on what it may be doing at that...

Is it possible to get a good sounding song without using any EQ or Compression relying on Volume Balancing alone ? ( indie rock)

I've never used a limiter in my life. It sounds like a lemonade drink from one of the Greek isles.... "Try some Alimita !! You won't live to regret it !"

Headphones vs Monitors for Mastering WTF? Oh Hell no!.......never say never ;)

It's hard to say. Some things just take off among the public {vinyl, stereo, cassettes, CDs, flat screen TVs, DVDs, microwaves etc} and some things just don't {8-tracks, minidiscs, Betamax videos etc}. And some things {5.1} have the jury out for an inordinately long deliberation....

However, think of EQ and effects as possible enhancers rather than "must-haves." Even if you must have them.

How much can neighbors in a neighboring apartment building hear my playing?

I get what you're saying, but on the other hand, if they cannot hear it, there'll be no objections, even if they don't like rock'n'roll people. Whereas, it's goodwill to let them know if it's bothering you, and it clearly is bothering the OP. Going completely against my advice, in two places I...

    Another headphone choice question

This is true. However, even if your bottleneck lay elsewhere, in having a fairly decent set of headphones, you'll be hearing those bottlenecks on better quality ~ which is part of getting to know your monitoring set-up.

How much can neighbors in a neighboring apartment building hear my playing?

I had an electric kit back in 2004/5 and I could not believe how loud the kick drum was. It was a TD6 and looked pretty much like this. It was a tiny thing, but what a noise it made ! It was like someone constantly thumping the wall or the ceiling. I thought, "the idea of going to an electric...

    Another headphone choice question

I am the champ of the cheapskates, and even I shelled out more than £80 {current value, £95 ¬¬>> $120} for mine. I have been using the M40x for a number of years now. They are the only headphones I've ever had in my life, that when a pair stopped working, I went for a repeat performance. That...

Why is my raw audio tracks recorded from virtual instruments do not sound as good as the STEM raw tracks provided by my instructor for practice?

Who can tell ? However, if there's one thing I've learned about virtual instruments, it's that you have to work a bit to get them sounding authentic and that can take time. Also, and this for me is crucial, it is how it sounds when part of a mix with everything else, that matters. Sometimes...
