    favorite dynamic chain for vocals

yes, old thread, but an interesting one. Vocals is my weakest area, I tend to use this chain: 1) siblance de-esser 2) Slate VMR (noise gate, channel console, EQ (FG-S or N generally), FG-401 compressor) Buss out to lustrous plates and repeater plugins. If it doesn't sound good in the mix...

Would you post a nice isolated guitar track and tell how you did it?

This is an isolated and full band version of a snippet of a new song. 3 guitars, I recorded them as guide tracks so I could put the drums down so they will be re-recorded, but they'll sound similar (just with better playing!) Focusrite 18i20, Gibson SG standard. L guitar - Bogner XTC amp, no...

    Metal mixing

same feedback as others, sounds great, except for the drums. They all seem buried and muffled, except for the kick. The snare sounds good in breakdown and slower parts (around 1:20, and 2:20) but they don't cut through very much. Listening on KRK Rokit 6 monitors.

Looking Out My Back Door - CCR acoustic cover

sounds fantastic! full, crisp and clear! Did you sing the VOX or just duplicate the track? Just curious. Acoustic sounds great, I have an Ovation and usually track with the pickup and external mic, but I can't get anywhere near the warm, crispy sound you have going on there. Nice work.

3 guitars all playing together seperation tips

most of our songs were specifically written for 2 guitar players so the 3rd guitar parts are usually limited to overdubs in certain parts. Generally speaking, I amp the two main guitars a little differently, hard pan both, and EQ one of them a little brighter than the other. One guitar only uses...

    dampening furnace room noise

I used a dB meter around the basement, most of the low-end rumble (100 - 130 hz) seems to be vibrations through the wall and ceiling, but the bulk of the ambient noise is the HVAC vent for sure. When the furnace is switched off, the ambient noise right next to the furnace room in the studio...

New "Helicopter-Sounding" Noise With Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd Gen)?

maybe it's some weird interference from something near your computer? When I have my external USB-C hard-drive plugged in and turned on, I immediately hear noise out of my speakers (connected via Steinberg UR 22). Same thing happens if have my Yeti USB mic plugged in and turned on. I noticed...

    dampening furnace room noise

We finished our basement about 8 years ago and now that I've converted an old bedroom to my studio, I want some advice for dampening the noise from the adjacent furnace room and doing some extra treatment for the studio. I have a vocal booth in the old closet with three 24x48x2 acoustic panels I...

a high energy rock instrumental - "Michael's House (a slight return)"

cool, I like doing two different lead tones for different solos too but I find it really hard to make complimentary sounds. I'm using Overloud THU and just started the 15-day free trial of the full version. There's SO MANY sounds in there.... oh, and it's hard for me because I hit things with...

Are the drums seated well with the rest of the instruments?

The drums seem to fit nicely for the most part. They could use more punch in the intro and around 1:39. The cymbals and ride could be much brighter overall though, can barely hear them on my Rokit 6's.

learning some new stuff about m/s compression and Vitamin plugins

wow, HUGE difference between the two (on my Rokit 6's). Very clear and crisp compared to the first version. I love Vitamin...when used sparingly, it really adds some nice top-end shine and clarity. Catchy tune as well.

    Hit Shitter - Metal-ish (80's)?

It could use some high end polish for my ears. The lead sound on the first solo sounds a little out of place, the tone on the 2nd solo seems to fit the sound better. Great transition into the chorus and nicely balanced overall. Great tune to drive way too fast to...

a high energy rock instrumental - "Michael's House (a slight return)"

sounds good! I'd like a little more meat on the rhythm guitars, and around 2:12 the lead is a bit thin, but it's TIGHT and very Satch-like. Great arrangement and production!

Late 2019 MacBook Pro Specs for Logic Pro X

I have a 2017 MBP, 2.9 GHz, 16 G ram, radeon pro 560, 512 G SSD. It's more than fine for recording and mixing. IIRC, the 2019's have the new kaby lake processors so they are faster, and more energy efficient. Under heavy load, my fan is LOUD AF, which is really irritating. They've allegedly...

'twas a heart attack of learning getting this one recorded, mixed and mastered, but I'm happy with the results. What do you think?

How Do I Improve This Recording? (please feel free to comment)

nice track...very chill. I listened on ear buds and my KRK Rokit6. Vocals sound a little too far in front like others have said and maybe some side eq to boost the hi-end to add some 'shimmer', but other than that it's really nicely balanced and tight sounding.

What are the most important steps for a good sound after reocrding it..?

I don't think there's a 'right' answer, but generally speaking, this is the template I start with: Start with plugins that won't modify the tone/sound, but help prepare the audio like: - gain staging via Logic's built in track parameter, or a dedicated gain plugin - noise gate (if needed) -...

Studio Building-If you had to do it all over again...

I wouldn't have freaked myself out so much about it. I spent weeks reading articles, and watching videos about acoustic treatment, equipment, and excruciatingly detailed tutorials about the molecular makeup of every piece of material in your studio and in the end, these 2 things were the most...

    "Hiding"

I just released our band's first EP. Clever Weapon on Spotify 8 months of more or less reading the manual of mixing and mastering, but we are really happy with the results and we're onto the next batch of songs!
