It seems like a good deal for storage, but it doesn't use firewire (usb 2.0) and I can't find the RPM anywhere.
I do have an external Western Digital firewire drive that I have been recording directly to and have so far been happy with it. The one I have makes less noise than my laptop and...
I would avoid recording in the closet unless it's at least the size of a small bedroom. I have an isolation booth that I use sometimes if I need a scratch guide guitar to play along with a drummer, but I never end up using what I record in there. I always have the guitarist rerecord in the big...
weird, i learned the term "kick in" on this site actually. I used to not particularly care for the F14 on kick and like you really liked it on other low frequency sources, until I did a session about a week ago and got a sound I really like out of it. (I was very happy considering I bought the...
The Icicle seems like the cheapest option here. It essentially is a USB preamp that clips on to your SM58. If you could save a little more a Presonus Firebox (2 channel interface) can be had on the used market for around $100 if you look hard enough. It uses firewire though.
Here is a great how to: on building the 25 minute $25 acoustic panel ($42 bass trap)

Swamp Leeches..! just me???
I really like to use an Audix F-14 as a kick in, and I'm not embarrassed to admit it anymore.
I think the Blue Kickball is the worst design imaginable for a kick mic. I don't know if it sounds good or not because I can't get it in a usable position... Maybe I...
If you're looking for very good sounding cheap mics look into Naiant mics.

and then add one of those cheap art preamps you're talking about. (Just make sure it has phantom power.) ...less than $100.
I know the original poster has figured this out, but for the sake of the board's knowledge (search feature) I'll put in my $.02. I have the DPSII which from what I understand is the same as the TPSII except it doesn't have on board digital converters. I can not get very much gain out of mine. I...
Shielding paint absolutely works. It's what custom guitar builders use because it's cheaper in bulk and takes less time to apply. If you're just doing a few guitars the copper foil would be more economical. Also make sure your guitars' wiring is in good shape.
Here's a link on how to shield a...
I really like this idea. I see things like this show up on craigslist under $50 pretty often. Do you use foam with cutouts to hold your mics in place? Where do you get the foam?
Do you own the house, or are you renting? That's such a long room, it would be hard not to want to finish it into 2 rooms. (Control and Tracking)
Might make the home more valuable too since you could easily convert the rooms into a bedroom and media room.
you can buy them new with with the case, suspension mount and the regular mount for $99... including shipping. (Sometimes less SDOTD was $70 shipped last week)
If you can come down on the price, I would be interested in buying both.
That's less convenient than the bags/cases and I don't have the boxes for the ones that sit in the open all the time.
Basically I have the boxes for all the mics I bought new, but with the used mics I was lucky that they made it without being destroyed. (Especially the ribbon, it was shipped in...
I'm building up a nice sized collection of mics, and so far I've just been leaving them in their bags/cases with those little silica packets. Problem is some of my mics don't have cases, also I've been keeping them on a ledge that goes around my room and it's starting to look cluttered.
Here's...
The Naiant mic I was talking about is the X-X with the Naiant guitar mount.
I love my X-Ms, and I can't stop recommending them to people looking for great mics on a budget.
