I'm using a Toshiba laptop now and sometimes I will run into latency issues when doing playback with lots of channels of audio (50ish) and over 10 plugins. I've already maxed out my RAM to 2 gigs on my laptop and I'm now thinking about going the Reamote route.
I've got a Sony Vaio laptop with...

I record directly to an external 7200 RPM firewire drive with 32 mb cache. I'm also using 2 Firepods all on the same firewire port as the hard drive and the matching backup hard drive.
So far, I've tracked 14 channels at once without a...
I checked it on 3 different cables both through my snake and bypassing my snake. All the cables work fine in other channels with the same mics.
It's definitely the one preamp. I don't know if it's really a problem though because phantom works fine with mics requiring phantom power. And...
I use 2 Firepods chained together and this problem only happens on Channel 3 of one of the Firepods. When I have a microphone requiring phantom power hooked up like a LDC I don't have any problems. But if a Dynamic is plugged in like an SM57 or a Beta57a, I'm getting a loud buzz. It also doesn't...
It depends on how big the drum kit I'm recording is, but for a standard 5 piece...
2 Naiant X-Ms as overheads (Usually in recorderman)
1 Shure SM57 on Snare Top
1 Shure Beta57a on Snare Bottom
3 Cad GXL3000s on toms
1 Audix F-14 on kick
1 Cad M177 as Room mic
I'm thinking about adding an Apex...
I took the plunge
I've noticed that 2.54 will not pan to the center when using the main window (the one with the track waves) the mixer will pan to the center fine.
I'm using a trackball, so maybe it's a sensitivity thing.
Otherwise I haven't noticed a difference so far with what I'm doing.
I was watching ebay like a hawk recently (as I was in the market for another Firepod) and several have sold for around $300. Strangely at the same time Musiciansfriend was blowing out new ones for $340. I even think a guy was selling a few brand new ones on ebay starting at $300. People were...
I use a matched pair of Naiant X-M's as drum overheads almost all the time. Great buy for the money. I also almost always use them when recording acoustic guitar.
Edit: There's an application matrix on the Naiant site, if you follow it you really can't go wrong... Regardless of the price.
I'll vouch for the Naiant X-M matched pair. It's basically all I've been using for drum overheads and acoustic guitar.
They didn't sound so great when I tried them on my Wurlitzer piano but that could have been my horrid mic placement when I tried it. (I now use LDC's for piano)
I also only...
If you're looking on the cheap, look into Cascade, Apex, and Nady. (Possibly in that order) They all have similar looking models, that sound very similar.
...similar, similar... similar
I've been thinking of picking up an SM7 for a while, and the mercenary audio mics are intriguing. Both the modded 57 and 58 seem to achieve the same thing but the 57 is $15 cheaper. Why is that?
Also can anybody else comment on the mercenary audio modded 57 and/or 58?
doesn't your mac already have some sort of audio card with a mic input? Just get an adapter and whatever cheap mic you can find if you aren't concerned with the sound. Nady and Behringer both make $10 dynamics.
If I were you I would get a Blue Icicle (turns any mic into a usb mic) and an SM57. I don't know if you will be very satisfied over your built in condenser though.
