Should I record my vocals with a digital recorder or connect it to my computer? is there a difference?

As long as you have 2 choruses, 2 verses, and an intro? i mean will record companies and all that pay attention to the exact same type of structure that everyone else is doing?

I have an SM57 which i connect to an XLR to 1/4 cable and then i use a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter to connect it to my computer. But when i do, there is a huge delay and also there is extremely bad quality, if i can even hear the sound in the first place. Someone told me i need a pre-amp. Do i? Thanks.
