Mastering your project: DIY or Go to a Pro?

I'm a true, 100% home recordist, so I never have to grapple with this question. That doesn't make me noble, just poor! Absolutely everything that goes into every one of my recordings is my responsibility, from mastering to cleaning beer cans out of the studio.

    Newly "Mastered" Beatles CD's

Could you be more specific? Not being a smartass, I'm really curious. ARe you talking about the stereo mixes, the mono, or both?

    ITB reamping

After seeing some reamping done to great effect in a studio recently, I'm really interested. Problem is, my collection of ONE amp doesn't cut it. Is there a software solution to reamping an already recorded guitar part through a variety of amps? I know real amps and mics would be better, at...

    Newbie With Potential

There are a millon considerations, which, if you're like me, just means lots of fun. Take a look at humidity and temp so your instruments can be cared for ad your cables won't rust to your amps. One thing I wish I'd known before starting my own project is how right angles/parallel walls can...

Do you start "producing" your song before it's done?

Wow, looks like I'm in the minority here, but I throw all my track onto the DAW before I touch any of them. The most I do before I'm done tracking is pan a guitar or vocal hard right or left while I'm tracking the harmony part. The longer period of time between tracking and mixing, the better...

    Omg hurry up and buy!!

The auction ends ANY MINUTE, HURRY! Read the description for the full effect. "There is only one item greater than an autographed guitar, and that's a custom airbrushed autographed guitar!"

    reaper any good?

I used to use ProTools. Switched to reaper, never looked back. After a few months using it, I like it much much better.

Reverb on Bass Guitar and Kick Drum tracks…

I usually go dry, but there are some songs where I want a nice, muddy swamp for the mix to stick in. It sounds bad, but when you suddenly cut the verb for the chorus, it's a neat effect. It's the timeless thing of dissonance increasing steadily, then sudden, glorious consonance.

    Import ProTools?

I'm wrestling with this same issue right now. I did one whole session, track by track, but it was incredibly tedious. Cursing myself the whole time, "Did you really need THAT MANY guitar parts?" I eagerly anticipate a fix.

    windows

Sorry for all the noob questions, I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome. Is there a way to get the edit and mix views in separate windows? I'd like to put mixer in one (video) monitorm edit in the other.

    Let Every Track Be Heard

I disagree. I think a better motto would be, 'Let Every Track Do it's Job.' Some parts blend, maybe even become indistiguishable, but blend and contribute to the mix. If I could hear every violin individually on a recording of Elgar's Enigma Variations, it would be a pretty crappy mix (or...

    Mic Advice for Rap

Just here to warn you off the ST55. I have the GT55 (same mic) and like it OK for many things, but have come to loathe it for vocals. I end up having to EQ all the vocals I do through it pretty severely. For LDC's, you can't go wrong with an AT4040. It's money. However, considering you're...

    from many, one

I have a noisy guitar amp, lots of hum, but too much work to do in not enough time to address the hum issue right now, so what I do is meticulously chop up my guitar parts to remove all silence (well, hum actually) between phrases, and sometimes notes. It's pretty quick, actually, and sounds...

    Upright Bass Eq in Reaper?

Ditto making it two tracks. On one, bring out the beautiful low end that instrument provides. On another, roll off the bass and try to eq for the 'slap' artifacts. Last time I played upright on a track, I ended up making four tracks. Probably too many, but it sounded good to me. Two like I...

Why digital is superior to analog

That stuff reminded me of this guy. If you live near one of these installations (artworks? whatever they are) do yourself a huge favor and visit one.

How to deal w/ guitar distortion?

How many amps do you own/can you borrow? You might try backing off the gain (or 'drive' on your od or distortion pedal) a little and then re-amping through your various amps. It's an easy way to get lots of 'fatness' and layers out of only one performance.

    no-bleed headphones

My favorite kind of solution: cheap and improvised (well, cheap if you have the stuff lying around, which I do). I'll try this later today with my earbuds (If I can find them, never used them) and my lawn-mowing headphones. Then, when I have my next session that matters* I'll probably get...
