"How many guitars do you NEED?"

it's interested how we confuse "need" with "have".... do we end up needing everything we get? anyway, the true answer is one. I've seen some pretty good guitar players get through entire shows with just one guitar!

    nylon d string breaks

you're obviously playing that string too much. pay more attention to the A and G. ;)

    mic on a classical?

That sounds like a less than optimal solution. I gather from this that you are tracking the guitar first and then adding the vocal. It sounds like she anchors her thumb/palm against the guitar below the sound hole and that is what "thumps" -- is that it? Is she playing sitting down in the...

    Martin

No, I don't mind. :p I bought my circa 1970 00016C, which they stopped making about a year later, used about 10 years ago for $900 including the original case. I was not looking for a used guitar but it just appeared at Sam Ash on 48th Street in NYC when I was...

    Martin

As per my post earlier in this thread, check out Martin classicals. For a little less dough, Seagull makes nice classicals too. There are also a lot of Spanish classicals that play very nicely (not all are made for the strings to be set up miles from the neck); there are some stores that...

    2 mics to record vocals?

I have heard some really good vocals recorded through an SM58 or the like. For someone used to singing on stage through a dynamic mic right up on top of the thing, it's a whole learning experience to switch to being a foot or so away from a large condenser. If you sing well and your chain is...

I have a 00016C, circa 1970. C meaning classical. That's right, Martin makes nylon string guitars (I think there was a period of time during the 80s and 90s when they stopped making them for awhile). A great nylon string guitar for a non-classical player.

    reverse-bowing problem

update Well, as it turned out, the truss rod adjustment didn't work (although it seemed to help a little at first). My initial supposition (and Treeline's more specific one) turned out to be correct. Because he left it lying around it got all dried out. The tech guy at Sam Ash gave us a copy...

Marshall MG100HDFX/MG412 Slant Cab Half Stack Package v. Marshall MG100DFX Combo

Good point. A good 60W tube would blow away the 100W Marshall, no? By the way, I see you are in MA. You should come to the jamfest this summer! In fact, all of you kind souls on this thread should make the trek to Andover, CT this August (check out the jamfest threads in the dragon cave).

    new acoustic

theoretically, the fact that the cutaway reduces the volume and/or shape of the cavity reduces and/or changes the resonance. from what i can hear, if it's a good guitar it's very difficult to tell the difference; the natural differences between guitars of the exact same model are probably...

Marshall MG100HDFX/MG412 Slant Cab Half Stack Package v. Marshall MG100DFX Combo

Thanks, that's helpful. I am sure you are right about paying for the Marshall name, but the current package deal of $599 for the 100W head with the four speaker cabinet seems pretty good (and perception means a lot to a 14-year-old).
