    First Song in the Clinic

I like it... Nice tune man, I remembered it 20 min. after I heard it so that's always a good sign...or symbol. The song could use a little arrangement work (shorter intro, cut the first guitar solo), but if it is your song and if artistically the arrangement works for you, cool. Keep recording...

    Guitar amp modelers

The best modeler hands down. The J-Station could never overcome the Pod's hype machine but to my ears and most guitarist I know who've A-B'd them, the Pod just isn't as accurate or "vibey" as the J-Station. I got mine after the 2.0 software update, so if you are lucky enough to find one make...

    Vinyl now in Best Buy

Laser Turntables The ELP Laser Turntable is expensive, but if you really love vinyl, it's the only way to listen. The five beam laser system picks up every nuance in the grooves while never touching the record; making a vinyl record last just as long, or longer, than a CD. At the 2004 CES show...

used hi hats -- triumphs and perils

To me, older cymbals are like older guitars. Usually they have better sound, more personality and mojo and most of the time they can be had for less than new. Try some pawn shops or eBay and look for A. Zildjians or another brand that has a reputation...a good one that is. Wuhan hats are hard...

    388 Diehard: Kelley Stoltz

All these posts about the 388 got me thinking about this guy from San Francisco, Kelley Stoltz. He is on the Sub Pop indie label and has had some really great reviews from Goldmine and Mojo magazines. He records his albums exclusively to a Tascam 388. His music has been compared to Brian Wilson...

    Tracks aren't bouncing ARGH! 424mkIII

Yeah Donny, the 424 would work as a mixer for recording to the MiniDisc unit; might be cool for recording a band or rehearsals. But I'd try the external bounce on it and I think you'll be surprised.

Tascam MF-P01 Demo #1: Bowie jam!

Dave's stuff is so cool. Yeah, there's a few clams here and there, but the tracks always sound like they were recorded with fun in the air. Keep jamming and keep posting Dave... The MF-P01 is great for what it is. The single input and ease of use is great for songwriting sketches but if you...

    Tascam 388 Story...

Hail the studio 8! I get the feeling Zorf wasn't raised on Tascam stuff. Not all, but most guys who cut their teeth on Tascam's will always have a soft spot for them. And in some of us, that soft spot has morphed into an all encompassing obsession. I love the look, feel and sound of Tascam...

    Tascam 388 Story...

Ico, if you are going to part with it, I think I just might have to sell my other kidney and get it myself. Give me a few weeks would you? As a recording brother solid? Anyone need a kidney, blood type A neg. ?:)

    TEAC-144 portastudio repair project

Maxell MS-30 Audio Pro cassettes are the shit. They come in 60 and 90 as well but you want to use as little tape as you need for the project, IMO. You can get them here...WMSales.com Maxell Studio Cassettes I've used TDK SA's in their "professional" packaging at 30 and 60. They were good too...

    Tracks aren't bouncing ARGH! 424mkIII

External bouncing solution? I used to do carefully thought out internal bounces on the 424 but as soon as I got my DAT recorder (this was in '94, so no laughing) I used it exclusively for bouncing. External bounces allow you to record all four tracks and then sub-mix them to another machine...

Great vid on how to record guitar!

I love those Chandler TG preamps. The monitor speaker feedback trick was cool too...Keep them coming.

    Tracks aren't bouncing ARGH! 424mkIII

The directions Dave gave are right on; that is the way to bounce tracks on the 424mkIII. Your tape head may be screwed up so recording to track four won't happen but you should be able to see a signal in the track four meter regardless. Try to send a new signal (bass, keys, etc...) to track four...

Tascam DP02cf Demo #4: Beatles jam!

You said it very eloquently Dave. The new recording/mixing process that ProTools etc... has brought to the home studio is just not my bag. I try to use DAW's and "change over" for good but...I CAN'T! I don't know...for making demo's or just recording for fun I just love the feel of analog...

Worked on a 100+yr. old guitar today.

Reminds me of this classical guitar I bought from an old guy who was liquidating his guitar collection. Me and my Dad saw the ad in the paper and went down to check it out; the old dude had guitars wall to wall in every room in his house. Some were junk but most were really nice. He had no idea...

    In Studio with Michael Wagener

The condenser mic just off the floor, six feet away was an interesting trick. The finished track sounded good but I thought the hats sounded a little "sloshy". Whether that was the ribbon mic or the brand of cymbals (looked like some specialty brand, not Zildjian's or Sabian's), they sounded bad...

Tascam DP02cf Demo #4: Beatles jam!

Cool Dave. Sounded cool. You are using the setup we talked about awhile back (front end mixer into the DP's inputs); glad to hear it works...and great at that! I heard another thing about the DP-02 that worries me. Along with not being able to bus the two inputs to one track, I read a review on...

MXL 603 - massive Marik mod

They sounded pretty good! No distortion on the hard strummed part and they captured the room sound just enough. The little milk discussion at the end was well recorded too...:)
