I agree. My 5050 8 track has no NR and in my opinion, doesn't need it. Even with all eight cranked, the hiss is negligable. It rivals my TRS-8 with DBX. Also, the Otari is a sonically superior machine.

Teac 3340 or 3440. Both are great 4 track machines. Careful though, once go to analogue you'll never be the same. :D

Check everything that has already been mentioned. Demag, clean and point the 57 at the D string right at the top (towards the headstock) of the sound hole. If it has a pickup try a blend of the two. Note: I agree that a 57 is not my first choice for an acoustic. Any decent condenser would be...

Use de-natured 100% isoprophyl alcohol. You should be able to find it at a chemical supply place. Rubbing alcohol has too much water in it. Use Q-tips in the direction of the tape movement. Don't use it on the pinch roller. It will dry it out and cause it to crack. I use small amounts of Windex...

Infrared photo interupters work fine. The problem is farther down the chain. Without a schematic I don't think I can do much more. Off to the repair shop.....when I can afford it. :rolleyes:

The counter on my Otari MX5050 8 track does not advance. It shows zeros all the time. I went deep and found the counter unit. (Part # PB9A310) It appears to be a notched wheel (that is attached to the counter roller) that spins through two black plastic pieces that are on a small CB . These...

Yup. Temperature. If all the guitars are sharp then it has got colder. They go flat as it gets warmer. I have lots of experience with cold guitars up here in the frozen North.
