    Tape deck remote control plugs

Thanks for posting that. I might have to rig up one of these myself. Nice not to have to cross the room to work the machine when you're sitting at the piano trying to record.

    Reel to reel rack/cabinet - what's a good design?

Thanks for posting those. They'll come in handy down the road.

    Reel to reel rack/cabinet - what's a good design?

Thanks for posting the photos. I've saved them for reference to build my own. I really like the retro look of your desk. If you can find the sketches, I'd be interested in seeing those too. Great job.

    Volume faders and busses/aux inputs

In a traditional analog setup a buss is used to route a channel signal or a group of channel signals out of the board on one or more busses. Say you are micing up a drum kit using seven channels (mics) to an eight track tape machine. To avoid bouncing all of those tracks down to two tracks, you...

Tascam 38, issues that can be resolved?

Mine does the same. While it doesn't stop on a dime it handles the tape very gently. Just keep your fingers away from those two rotating high-speed fans! :D

    Reel to reel rack/cabinet - what's a good design?

I love it! How wide is just the console itself? And how wide is the total desk? Do you have plans anywhere you could share? I'd like to do something like this for mine when I build out my studio. A 6' steel bench just doesn't have the same vibe.

    Home studio wall help needed

While that's true, six years out of a young man's life is not an eternity. He can still record in his bedroom until he finishes his education. Why spend that much money on something he's going to leave behind in six years or less? Unless he really is going to live at home until he's 30.

    Home studio wall help needed

    16. Two years until graduating HS. Are you going to college? If attending college what will you do afterwards? My advice would be to keep saving your money to spend on your own place unless you plan on living at home until you're 30. You've been saving money for six years. Save for another six...

Can you call it a studio without a console?

They said that 20 years ago too.

Can you call it a studio without a console?

Well, not a console I'm familiar with. I see a lot of faders but I don't see any knobs.

Can you call it a studio without a console?

No matter what you call your recording area, a console is pretty much a requirement for recording to analog tape. And yeah, it does look cool. With or without the lava lamp. ;)

    Feedback loop on mixing board

Channels are on the mixer, tracks are on the tape machine. Try muting the channels that you have mics plugged in to when you are monitoring from the machine through the sub-in's. From where do you control the mix while monitoring the sub-in's? Do you have a manual for this mixer?

Being for the Benifit of Mr. Tape

A few other thoughts... Never had to upgrade the software or buy new a new OS for my tape machine. Never ran out of available physical or virtual memory on my tape machine. Always have enough inputs and outputs. Latency? On a tape machine? The tape machine never hangs up because it's...

    Hawaii 5-0 Theme

One of the all time great TV themes. When I blew trumpet our high school stage band played this for a concert. Can't wait for the new series.

Being for the Benifit of Mr. Tape

I've never had to re-boot my tape machine, nor has it ever crashed on me. I've also never accidentally deleted an entire spool of tape.

As Billy Joel wrote: ""It was a beautiful song, but it ran too long. If you're gonna have a hit, you gotta make it fit. So they cut it down to 3:05." If anyone remembers that tune.
