Actually, on a related note, a studio near me is upgrading to protools and I'm buying a few bits of gear from them. If I buy a second hand copy of Cubase would that be illegal? If I made a back up copy would that be illegal? If my dongle broke and I used a crack to sort it out would that be...
I've been recording bands on an AW16G for the last year or so and writing music for adverts/films purely on the PC in Reason. I've got so fed up with them not being integrated (unless I sample the AW16G stuff or try and synch it) - that I've decided to go for a computer based recording system...
My eyes! My eyes!
I'm new to this thread but I had to read the first nine pages. Brilliant stuff. Thanks Harvey.
Unfortunately staring at the screen for so long has induced a kind of hallucinogenic headache so I'm going to lie down for a little while.
urgh!
* slaps forehead.
Of course. Will do. I have a feeling that they'll say it will work with a Pentium I pocket calculator though. :)
I'm probably going to use Cubase for recording (and submixing a little).
Wavelab for editing and T-Racks for mastering.
I've decided on the M Audio 1010LT interface and I've located a console but I don't know what I need in terms of the PC. I'm getting one built by a friend but I don't know what to ask for.
WHat should I say to him? Baring in mind that I'm pretty poor. ;)
I'm updating to a computer based set up with a M Audio 1010LT.
I've been trying to think of ways to use the SPDIF on the 1010LT and I was wondering if I can use the optical i/o on my old Yamaha AW16G. Is that a viable option?
This site is awesome. You guys have really helped. I'm leaning towards this kind of set up - a 24 track Spirit Studio mixer, a super fast PC and a M-Audio Delta 1010LT.
What do you pros think?
Would I be able to run a small number of dynamics on the audio until I get myself some more outboard...
Some microphones need a bit of electricity to work. Phantom power will provide that power to the microphone.
This is an excellent website. I've pretty much absorbed all I can from it.

I'm a UK resident and I'm upgrading from a Yamaha 16-track to a computer based recording set up and a 24 track desk.
After a little investigation I think I'm going to get an 8 i/o soundcard - not sure which one yet - and then get another at a later date so I have 16 direct recording channels...
I guess I like the idea of being able to edit music on a PC since I've worked that way with dance music for years and it's the way I've worked in pro studios. I'm trying to get a set-up that is a halfway house between pro and home studio since I record local bands pretty much every week. I want...
Since he'd have a pre-amp maybe a budget condenser would be better than the SM57? Maybe a Samson CO1 or a CO3? That would give a better sound on a vocal and acoustic guitar.
Any advice on mixers etc? I've spotted a nice 24 track studio desk with 4 stereo groups, 4-band parametric EQs etc - Spirit Studio.
Also, is this the best idea given the budet? Is there any other sort of computer recording method that gives me more direct tracks for the budget?
Thanking you...
I tend to use the standard vocal dynamic ("solo male" I think) on the input channel with a bit of 6k added for brightness. It helps if you have the input gain on full because the pre-amps are a little weak.
On the playback channel I sometimes add a little more 6k and usually pu the "hipcomp"...
Hi guys & gals, I've been recording bands for a while on an AW16G but I'm looking to build myself a better set-up with the proceeds.
I'm looking to spend about £2,000 - £3,000 on a computer based recording set-up. I'm thinking probably a 16-track desk, a fast PC and a decent soundcard. I'll...
