The suggestion for the EMG's is dead on. You can also try the Sustainer from Fernandes. If you build the body out of a heavier wood though, it will change the balance that you are used to.

Sounds like the EQ section needs to be recapped.

My suggestion would be to find a "give away" bass at some yard sale or a cheapo neck on ebay and practice on that. One screw up and you'll have to get a new neck or turn it over to a luthier to have it repaired.

Also, on many LED Ladders in Fostex equipment, check them for those notorious cracked solder joints. LED's are hard to kill and cracked joints will probably be what you find :)
