    2" vs Digital Audio Recording

Its no secret that tape sounds way better than digital. I don't think that's subjective at all, the fact is that tape has many great qualities to it, while digital has many terrible and harsh qualities to it. Even if tape did nothing to the sound in terms of eq and compression, it would still be...

    What's Your Setup?

Just curious, to see what people are generally working with on this forum, you can just post the basics if you want or get as detailed as you want. Want to see if people here are more decked out pro-level, or minimalist home recorder. I pretty much fall into the latter category. I have a...

    "Classic Rock" Mic Pres

Yeah, I guess from what I've been reading all the old British stuff was done on Neve and Helios consoles which were not tube preamps. The reason I ask is I just got a EHX tube preamp, and I'm testing it out trying to figure out how useful it will be. So far its worked really well for electric...

    The Big Can't Sing List

The unfortunate truth is that 99.99999999999% of all band singers can't sing fort their life. It would be much easier to make a short list of the ones that actually can sing. There are so many bands that would be incredible if they just got a good singer. I was thinking this the other day about...

    "Classic Rock" Mic Pres

Hey just a quick question I've been wondering about. I know that both tube and FET mics were used for recording on a lot of the classic rock albums, Stones, Hendrix Zeppelin ect. My question is did they use tube mic pres or solid state like the Neve 1073. I know that was used for a lot of old...

    Observation on recording vox

Just an interesting thing I've found is that it is far more important for a good recording to have a singer comfortable and in the right place mentally for the song, than to have everything technically perfect. I doubt even if I had the most expensive mics and equipment in the world that I would...

We've Got A New "King Of The Low End" LDC...

You can't just tell people, "Forget about about these mods, or trying to find less expensive mics that sound good, just go buy a Neumann." This forum is HOME recording, who the hell is going to have a U48 for their bedroom? My only goal is to make demos without them sounding like absolute garbage.

Looking for a preamp for my Mic.

If you're looking for cheap, good quality and a major boost more than you need. The one for you is a mackie 402vlz mixer. This has a ton of power and head room. It comes has 2 of the mackie preamps, which are super good quality, probably just a bit below the super expensive boutique preamps. And...

u87 vs. Kiwi for "all pourpose" mic??

Hey I just went on the blue website and checked the response chart of the blueberry. http://www.bluemic.com/blueberry/ It doesn't seem to have a scooped midrange. I believe you that it does, but I'm just wondering do you know what causes that?

    Stupid vocal request

Hey, Are you requesting someone to sing the song for the track you're doing? I could try do that for you, I've sung opera before and am pretty well practiced and experienced. Good luck.

We've Got A New "King Of The Low End" LDC...

Thank you for posting this, it gives us commoners a chance to actually get some perspective on gear we wouldn't have access to. Also, sure its not going to be a perfect test but, its a lot better than nothing. Also, I'm definitely not claiming to be an expert on mics. I am just a home recorder...

any one confirm my plan (preamp schematic)

That is a really amazing looking plan. How did you know how to do all that, did you go to school for engineering?

SM57 or SM58? There can be only 1!

No, but I agree for me modding stuff in general is pretty awesome. I got an Oktava MK219 off Ebay for 100$ and I'm sending that to him. That guy is like the wizard of microphones! Just today I dropped off an epiphone valve jr amp to an amp tech I know, who's going to do a bunch of mods on it...

No more spending for one year.

I am in the exact same place with the spending. I have to keep reminding myself I'm only making demos and you don't need a ton of stuff for that. I just love gear. I would love to get some bagpipe software as well.

Do You Like (Or Hate) Your Voice?

I like it, it definitely has a rich tonal quality. However whenever I hear myself I always think slightly WTF, it doesn't really sound like any other singer I've ever heard. Sometimes I have a slight David Bowie thing going on, but I'm not sure anyone would see that. My voice sounds almost...

How did you learn to sing?

The journey of a musician no matter what instrument they play is way more complex than attributing it to one element like "lessons" or "played in a band". Every detail and action of someone's life is all connected and many countless things can have great influence on someone on their development...

SM57 or SM58? There can be only 1!

I just read about the Michael Joly mod. I'm going to both that and the transformer replacement mod. I'm glad to see that other people including Joly have noticed the same thing on these which is mid-range ridiculousness. Good to see that there's a way to fix that.
