NEWBIES - THE ART OF MASTERING YOUR SONGS (an introduction)

I think you're being a little unfair, lemontree. Speaking as a newbie, I can say reading manning1's articles answers many of the questions I would otherwise have asked. Why don't you share some of your experiences on how you got your mixes so much "better" than his?

NEWBIES - THE ART OF MASTERING YOUR SONGS (an introduction)

Thanks again manning1! On this topic - what are people's experiences with T-Racks? I've seen and heard it used but I'm not experienced enough to rate it...

    Outboard FX

Hi all, Quick question about outboard effects. My setup is SP-B1 > Seasound Solo > Cubase SX. I was thinking about getting a decent quality reverb unit or multi-fx, but I'm not sure if I would be able to record my vocals/instruments dry and then access the rack gear from cubase? From what I've...

    Valuable lesson learned!

Hi, As some of you may already know I'm pretty much as new as a newbie can be. I'm getting my setup together and i've pretty much got all the "necessaries" to start recording to a reasonable sound quality while I learn the art of recording and mixing. However, I want to pass on a valuable...

For those who think cheap equipment cant get the job done

I'm not going to give my opinion on the music, because hell - you guys haven't heard my stuff yet :), but because I'm from a "rock/guitar based" background, when I listen to R&B/Hip Hop from people on these boards I never know how much is found loops and what have you and how much is being...

    VERY Important Lesson !!!

Exactly. I used to live with a guy who claimed to have tinnitus, and it was very annoying because he was basically a malingerer, and as a musician I take hearing damage very seriously. With equipment and monitoring as advanced as we have today there's really no need to play at "11" anymore.

Many thanks - these articles are really helpful. Of course we're going to have to learn from some of our own mistakes, but forewarned is forearmed as they say! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

    "Space" in a mix

Hi guys/dolls, I'm a complete newbie, and I'm going to be recording mainly experimental rock, but I was listening to some Van Morrison LPs last night, and studying the mix and production. It seems a lot of professionally produced records have a great sense of "space" - there are lots of...

    Which software?

Holy crap that is one helluva machine! I must say in my brief time mucking about with audio recording, I've only used Cubase VST and SX - SX is superbly sexy but I agree with the previous poster in that it is amazingly complex. Luckily I love a challenge!

    Partition question

Thanks for the advice guys - unfortunately I'm having a hell of a job installing Xp on this machine. It keeps giving me a "file cannot be copied" error, which I've been looking into. Unfortunately, it seems it could be caused by anything from the ram to the motherboard. Ho hum.

    Partition question

Hi all, I'm installing a new 7200rpm 80GB hard drive in my cubase machine, using NTFS. Is it a good idea to have two partitions - one for applications and one for data (the cubase project/song data I mean) or does it not make a lot of difference? Thanks!

    Phantom powered mics US/UK

Even with shipping etc the one i found is fractionally cheaper than red sub, but I'm annoyed because red sub are in my town, so I could have driven across town and bought one! Still, you live and learn eh? :D

    SX vs VST

Hi all, I'm currently using Cubase VST, but I've heard people saying good things about SX. Looking at the Steinberg site I feel I don't really understand enough about the software to properly compare features. Has anyone used both, and can you give me your opinion as to which has the most...

Mic level question - dynamic vs condenser

Thanks for the welcome, and your reply NYMorningStar. I don't think it can be a computer setting - the Solo has an LED that indicates when the signal is of a good strength (and turns red when clipping is about to occur) and this doesn't light until the trim and level are almost maxed. It's...

Mic level question - dynamic vs condenser

Thanks for your reply Tex. So you reckon it's pretty normal for me to have to almost max out the trim and level to get a workable signal?

    Phantom powered mics US/UK

Hi all, I've been reading that you guys tend to rate the Studio Projects B1. I've located one on ebay, but it's in America. If I had one shipped over here to the UK, would it still work OK? Sorry if this is an extremely stupid question :D Alex
