Hi all, Wow not been here for a while - big improvement - no more Java menu!
Anyway, could you please take a listen to this track and let me know what you think. I've only been doing this about 4-5 months or so but I'm really enjoying it. This track is off an acoustic CD I just released but I'd...
Hi all,
After I got some really useful comments and tips after posting my first ever mixed song "Serious Suburbia" a week or two back I thought I'd do the same with the second.
This one I think needs quite a bit of work to get it "spot on" - it's got more obviously electronic drums (all played...
More often than not I find my first take is the best. Perhaps not the most note-perfect, but it has the most feeling. SO.. I'm on a mission to try and get everything in one take, even if it means a duff note here or there. I'd rather it was honest and had some emotion than perfect and lifeless.
Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Cubase but I was wondering if there is anywhere to download free or shareware plug ins, synths, pianos, reverbs etc legally?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Thanks again guys - I've got a little checklist of stuff to do with it. Thing is, after all your positive comments I'm a bit scared it was a fluke! Nonetheless, I've learned a hell of a lot just tracking and mixing this one song, so hopefully it will start to get easier from here!
I'll maybe...
lynx - thanks for trying - think my server fell over some time during the night GMT, should be fine again now.
Ray J - many thanks for taking the time to give me your comments. I think I have a tendency to over-reverb my vocals because I'm quite paranoid about them. I've noticed it's easier to...
Thanks for your comments John! I'm pleased that you think the "core" of the mix is sound, as this is what I'm trying to put my finger on before attempting anything too experimental.
I'll take your advice on board and work some more on it.
Hi everyone,
Like I say this is my first ever mixdown - I've been recording for about 3 or 4 months so pretty much everything is learning, reading, researching and trying.
Please give me some feedback on how it could be improved - I would be very grateful...
That was a great article - thanks for sharing it with us. It is easy to get caught up with the technical side of things and lose sight of what you're actually trying to acheive - namely make music people will enjoy listening to (in my case at least).
This is probably really obvious to you all, but I thought I'd post it just in case it saves any other newbs some time.
I realised tonight just how important it is to put good sounds to tape (or HDD) straight off the bat. I've been mucking around with one song for weeks and it still won't sound...
Great! I'm not using a mixer, as the Solo can theoretically take 4 inputs at a time anyway. Do you think I need to be using a mixer? If so, what would be the benefits? I'm monitoring through a class A amp and a pair of good Mordaunt Short hi-fi speakers.
Thanks Miles, that's a great help!
I'm trying to keep my setup minimal, but quality for the time being in the hope it will grow with my experience. At the moment it's SP B1 ->behringer composer pro->seasound solo EX->cubase sx which gives me decent enough sound quality for now.
I'm at the stage of assimilating as much information as possible, while trying things out and actually DOING the recording thing so it's not all theoretical.
Could anyone recommend any books, reference and tutorial, that are up to date and well written for the home recording/project studio...

In my musical career I've been described as a "genius" and been implored to "write some decent songs". Obviously both can't be true so I take each with a pinch of salt. Don't forget - opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.
It's also worth bearing in mind that it's very easy to...
