    Machine at rest

Thanks Beck. I didn't know you should warm up a machine by turning it on at lease 15 minutes before recording. Thanks for that extra little nugget of info. When you say "release the tension on the tape so everything is at ease" what do you mean exactly?

    Machine at rest

I'm wondering what is best for my Tascam 388 when I want to take a break from recording. Should I unwind and take the tape off/shut down the machine if I want to take a: 15 min break? 30 min break? 1 hour break? Or should I leave the tape on the reel, on the machine?

Ooops. :drunk:Here are some pics of the record head. I did a full session today and... she is purring like a cat. I'm LOVING the 388.

    Head re-lapping or replace?

An update: I got my 388 back from TEAC repair yesterday. The head was relapped and the machine seems to be working very well. Track #1 is recording fine and there is no original crackle. So after 1 month and about $600 in repair I think I am ready to start some recordings. I'm very excited to...

    Head re-lapping or replace?

Ha! Will do. Thanks. p.s. I just did a bit of research on relapping and found this very helpful page http://www.analogrules.com/badheads.html So I'm really wondering why the Tascam guy is telling me he found a crack and then sending the head across the country to the East Coast to get relapped...

Nice clean work. I have a Tascam series 70 and was thinking about doing the same. Thanks for the pics. They do help!

    Head re-lapping or replace?

    Head re-lapping or replace?

Im getting the feeling that the guys at Tascam know less about whats going on than you guys do. They are a company called Digitron Electronics who from what I heard only recently became the Tascam factory service guys. He did say he found a crack in the head but why did it happen so suddenly...

    Head re-lapping or replace?

I talked to the Tascam repair guy today about all possibilities and he said that he looked with a microscope at the head and did find a crack. I was using the same tape when playing back and could hear pre-recorded takes that were recorded on track #1. They sounded perfect. About the initial...

    Head re-lapping or replace?

Thanks Steenamaroo. Do you think I would have noticed a little diminishing of the signal before it went in to the shop, or could track #1/the head just go out all at once like he is suggesting?

    Head re-lapping or replace?

I just got my Tascam 388 back from recalibration/refurbishment and noticed that track #1 was not recording to tape. I never had any indication of a problem with it before it was taken in for unrelated work. The tech said I need to either re-lapping or a head replacement. Why would the head...

    Tascam 388 motor seems "tighter"

I just got my Tascam 388 "refurbished" recently at TEAC in Montebello and have noticed that the right wheel seems tighter than before. When I start to wind the tape it is a bit harder tighter. Also had a few misfires with the RTZ (it would stop at a random spot half way to zero), and also the...

    Thanks cjacek.

Are these tapes good with the Tascam 388?

I just back from a store in Hollywood called Ametron. They had some decent stuff, and I also noticed they sold tape. They had Quantegy 406,408,478,480, and 661. All on 7" reels. My Tascam 388 was just calibrated for the 407. Can I still use some of these tapes listed above or should I stick...

    New Tascam 388 headphones crackling

Yea, Sorry about that. I asked the guy again and again but he would not give me any info. He also gave me the machine back with a new problem so I had to bring it all back down to TEAC in Montebello. I have a strong feeling that using them for the repair was a mistake.
