Nope. They seem to be sitting in the normal position about half way down the slots. I'm going to take the machine back to the TEAC repair tomorrow (it's still under warranty for another repair) and let them work on it. I'll let you know what they say. Thanks. M.

5 inch reels on a Tascam 388 Can it be done safely? I have some AMPEX 642 on 5" reels but not sure about trying it. If "no", why not? Thanks.

UPDATE: Today after about 4 hours of tracking guitars (with a fresh new reel of 407 squeaking away) I listened back to the track and it was totally warped!! I couldn't believe it. I was doing some echo feedback etc over them and didn't notice until I put them up on my monitors. Completely...

Actually it was happening before they changed the belt (right before it broke). But its funny because there is no squeaking with the thinner (?) AMPEX 461 tape. Could it be that the 407 reels are wound super tight? At the start of the 407 tapes there is no squeak, only after I get a few minutes...

I do like the raw sound I get on my Tascam 244. It definitely has a "feel" that works well with my music. I used to love the Tascam Porta one. But yea the link Hammerstone posted looks pretty good too!

Now it wont even playback at all. It froze up. It happened right after I fast forwarded it a bit. It suddenly stopped playing back. It just clicks stop. It still RW and FFs So I have no squeaking to listen for...just the cranky sound of the motor (it sounds like its dying)

They said they did do a complete recalibration. I'm not sure about the bias traps....? I do see what you mean about the fixed guides. There is a notch. Should that have been done with a recalibration normally? P.s. see my new thread on stopped playback.
