Good point Seafroggy's. The definition and its meaning changes to the person. I hate labels. I just know that there is no invisible force judging me. (and i think this gets back to the reason that i am willing to write about songs that express my ideals) I want my songs to be an extension of myself.
i recorded this and seven other songs for a solo guy. it was mostly just acoustic and him singing with occasional overdubs of guitars and extra vocal tracks. this was my favorite song from the sessions:

I started out using a combo of Vegas/Sound Forge nearly 10 years ago and I've always stuck with that. Now I use Vegas 8.0 and Soundforge 10. I like how they work together :)
I don't really think there is a good way to do it without getting the mixing board, that would be the best way. However, there are splitters. For example, while I was waiting for my headphone to arrive I had a 1/4" splitter that would split from one 1/4" to two 1/4" females. There are similar...
And not to lead this off the thread of do we write songs that promote a religious or non-religious belief...but I really liked that point SeaFroggys. We are interpreting things that other people wrote and, most importantly, people we don't know. Not that we shouldn't discuss those...
i'm not familiar with those recordings and don't quite have the time to check them out but the first step is to simply tune the bass drum to as close to that sound as you can get. is it being recorded with a whole kit?
edit: just snellular said the same thing...oops
I use a lexicon omega and it also functions as my soundcard...i have monitors plugged in through the monitor/line out's. i think it works well for my purposes.
I agree, my favorite song changes every day/week/month...to me it must be a great song that has been recorded "well" (not necessarily a pristine recording...some of my fave songs are by lou barlow). its a subjective question but that's what makes it fun, too. usually i flip between 'strawberry...
Yup, massive i think had the best comment here which is that you probably want to invest in some monitors and you will probably get some more trustworthy mixes.
yeah, i remember reading a quote from mccartney about how getting the abbey road mastering engineers to allow more bass was near impossible at first because they had an experience where they left to much bass on a record and it had to be recalled from skipping.
the bass sounds that david...
hm...that its a simplification. i'm an atheist--there's things i believe in though. what it literally means (and by that i suppose what it means to me) is that i don't believe in deities. i do not believe there was an ultimate creator of our universe and the Earth or that there is an invisible...
i'm not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for...

its really cool just to see everyone's responses...when i was involved in audio as a professional i did use reference listening...if nothing else just to give me perspective on whether i was reaching the clarity i wanted to reach or to give my ears a break. i'd often listen to thelonious monk...
