    Whiskey-soaked voice?

Those that claim it's better with whiskey are simply referring to the reduced tension that comes from alcohol. There aren't any properties to whiskey itself that is helpful. However, if you think about it, there are some things you can understand about your voice: 1) If this helps, that means...

    Achieving That Professional Vocal Sound:

I recently tried to use my H4n as an audio interface and had a lot of distortion going on. It would be fine for like a few notes, then it would be silent, then it would come in with a bunch of notes - wrong notes that I swear I didn't play! - it was frustrating. I was using it on a Mac into...

    Vocalist needed

If you have lyrics that would help too. :)

    Criticize my vocals please

I highly recommend you find yourself a good teacher. You really can't teach yourself how to sing, and there are some major things that lessons will help you with like tone production, breathing, and pitch.

Looking for feedback on my vocals

I just got the Rode NT-1a myself! I love it, but I'm using the Zoom H4n as a preamp and that isn't able to handle it. FYI, the Rode can work on 24V or 48V phantom power, but I don't know how that would do with the USB interface you're looking at.

Looking for feedback on my vocals

It doesn't have so much to do with the recording levels of the individual tracks, but what volumes they are set at in the end. This can be adjusted via software.

    Operatic vocal recording

A couple of comments on this. I appreciate where you are coming from and the advice you are offering. I just have some issues with the concept of "Adjusting my sound " for the space. If you look back at what great singers of the past did, they specifically tell you not to do this. Mainly they...

Looking for feedback on my vocals

I like your voice - it reminds me of the Savatage guy :) . I just think you need to work a bit on sustaining pitches/tone a bit from one note to the next. It seems to fade away instantly on each note even if you connect. In order to do this, you actually have to get louder toward the next pitch...

    Operatic vocal recording

I'm not sure what you mean by "vocal technique." To me, that means how you sing. I know how to do that, and I can sing softly (and do). But I want to be able to sing operatically, not pulled off the voice to accommodate equipment. I want equipment to accommodate me. Now, I get moving further...

    Operatic vocal recording

OK, I think I follow...a bit. ;) The problem isn't the mic, but the Zoom isn't able to handle what the mic can do. Still, a $15 fix is much more affordable than getting a better preamp. :)

    Critique my vocals please?

You have a lot of constriction in your sound, starting every phrase with what's called a glottal stroke. This is mainly the result of both registers (lower register or "chest" and falsetto) being underdeveloped. They normally work antagonistically against one another, and when they're both...

    Operatic vocal recording

I'll try to describe as best I can the conditions: I was 10 feet away for the duration of both of the recordings. I had the NT-1a plugged directly into the Zoom via XLR cable. The Zoom was not using any of the onboard mics. The mic was on a stand raised up about a foot above my head. The Zoom...

    Operatic vocal recording

OK, but I'm just using the Zoom H4n to record with. It doesn't go above 0db, and only goes above the -12 db once I go to the really high notes. And at this point spending thousands on a mic isn't an option - maybe when I know better what the heck I'm doing and can justify the expense. ;) I'm...

I guess I'm concerned, is there something wrong with the mic, or is this a somewhat normal thing?

    Operatic vocal recording

What is an in-line attenuator exactly? I'm new to all of this, so I'd like to understand at least on a basic level what equipment does. Can you recommend any models?

    Operatic vocal recording

OK, so I have purchased a Rode NT-1a because I wasn't really pleased with how my Zoom H4n was treating my voice, and the Audio Technica ATR30 I had was making my voice sound almost nasal because of the volume and clarity it already has. I did some experimenting, and here are two recordings of...

    Critique my vocals? (Acoustic sample)

That's great to hear! We singers have to be very in tune with our bodies and how we feel when we sing. We are the instrument, after all. Take it slow when you are singing through your song, go phrase by phrase making sure you breath correctly and support. If it doesn't feel like it was...

Best budget Mic and Preamp combo for a HUGE voice

Well, I had a student of mine recommend the Rode NT-1a, and since I found a used one for $150 on ebay, I decided to start with that. I know this won't be the last mic I buy, but I liked what I heard about them so we'll see if this can handle what I do. I can always return it if that doesn't do...

    Recording Vocals Pitch Issues

Of course, but it's important to know what exactly is causing the problem in order to find a solution. I recommend doing several recordings of the same piece or even segment of a piece. In the first take, do it with a monitor and no headphones. Listen to the recording to make sure everything is...
