Does changing tube really make a difference in "starved plate" designs? opinions

Fair enough, that was why I did the poll. :-) It's not a priority for me. I heard that mithril has the lowest capacitance....

Does changing tube really make a difference in "starved plate" designs? opinions

I'm not bashing 'starved plate' and maybe the expression invites scorn. I am skeptical that changing out a $3 unmarked tube for a $70 NOS in one of these units will really make a difference and is therefore, not worth the trouble and expense. I admit I've not taken the time to do so and make...

Cross Post -- DIY tube mic, basic design.

That is clever. How does it sound with the 47'sh capsule? FYI, I put a 47 style in this one.

Cross Post -- DIY tube mic, basic design.

This is an FYI. If you are into DIY, it is a fairly basic circuit, ala RoyerMod, U47, etc. Needs a larger donor mic, which in this case was a broken MXL V89MBP. The battery powered MXL mics have a slightly larger body, and they seem to come up on Ebay frequently enough in non-working...

    Another DIY Mic: Royer/SELA'sh with a 6AK5

Here's a link to the Royer. The Royer Tube Mic Mod for the MXL 2001 Also, here is the M49: here is the BigUgly It has the pattern controlled by a pot. There is a PSU schemo with an incorrect input voltage, I don't have the correct one on this PC.

    Another DIY Mic: Royer/SELA'sh with a 6AK5

Thanks Dave. As the 6AK5 has the same specs as the 5840, I just used the plate and cathode resistor values as the ""RoyerMod," which was designed to be similar to the U47. The BigUgly, Royer, U47, and the SELA above are all very very similar. The "BigUGly" is basically the RoyerMod with the...

    Another DIY Mic: Royer/SELA'sh with a 6AK5

Just thought I'd share this. Body: MXL V89MPB (broken=cheap) Parts I had on hand including K47 style capsule and a KCM transformer (which are the one's AFAIK FoxAudioResearch uses.) Smoke test sat, Hello world test sat. Schematic: I didn't have a 1uF cap that would fit, so the output...

    OT Whine: Buried, just buried

Thanks everybody. I've been told before about downsizing, (ahem) It is somewhat of a PITA to advertise/sell stuff, (photos, posting, shipping, etc) so maybe a good solution would be to just look at what I don't need (ie don't need to use, like that Fostex 8-track) set it aside and gradually sell...

    OT Whine: Buried, just buried

Buried in house projects, in gear, in working on gear, in broken gear, in not working on broken gear but soldering new gear, looking at schematics, AAARRHRHFHF, trying to blow up capacitors,,,.looking at gear that isn't hooked up, bewildered at hooking up said gear. Oh and then there is regular...

    Tube vs Toob

Check out the last post here: https://homerecording.com/bbs/equipment-forums/rack/whats-difference-between-starved-plate-toob-gear-vintage-tube-gear-147847/ The "cheap" pre is really a solid state amplifier with a "starved plate" tube circuit tacked on the end, the tube is run in a way to...

Does changing tube really make a difference in "starved plate" designs? opinions

It's def an effect. IMHO, the starved plate gimmick does do *something* I wouldn't question the late John Simonton who designed the TubeHead, and I've had a few boxes with the gimmick. It' spretty subtle which is why I get a little curious whenever someone posts about swapping in the...

Does changing tube really make a difference in "starved plate" designs? opinions

Does changing tube really make a difference in "starved plate" designs? opinions Just curious, You see this come up fairly often, I bought an XXX "tube" preamp and I want to swap out the unbranded tube for a NOS or different modern manufacture 12AX7 (insert famous name here) to make it sound...

    Ho hum...

OK, where did you get the PCB's? I'm now jealous, and need *yet another* DIY project to keep me away from actually making music...:o:D I did just finish a microphone based on the basic Royer/SELA circuit, using a 6AK5 instead of a 5840 and one of my groupbuy 47 style capsules...

Judy is a Punk! - Classic Ramones cover just for fun

Hah! I'm sure it was Johnny that cold cocked that frat boy. BTW, saw Shonen Knife not to long ago, I think I might have mentioned this in another thread, but for an encore, they changed out of the Japanese girlpop outfits (which is too cool in and of itself) for leather jackets and jeans and...

Judy is a Punk! - Classic Ramones cover just for fun

Kick ass. I'm just a bit partial to 3, but still all f'ing awesome I saw the Ramones at UW. There was a bunch of frat boys straight out of central casting in the audience trying to bait the band and the crowd. Well one of them succeeded. After about four or five songs you know 10 minutes...

Are you satisfied with your gear?

Well, no. I do manage to keep the gear lust in check. I'm just not satisfied with the progress I'm making with the projects on the bench, all 14 of them, and the repairs I need to make to several pieces of gear... Oh, and maybe actually use the gear I have.
