Cool. FYI, the meter is an HP 400E 10Hz-10MHz +/- 1-3% in the audio spectrum. However, it hasn't been expertly calibrated itself in a who knows how long. I also have a Fostex A-8 and I don't have a cal tape. 0VU in and out is close enough, and I live with it.

OK. Just throwing this out there, don't pounce too hard. -10dBv/0VU is supposed to be .316 volts. I have a good AC Voltmeter* that will read that and the MRL tape. But adjusting a tiny trimmer to get there ain't easy, especially for the MSR-16. As long as the reproduce level is close enough...

With the notable exception of the MXL V69, most tube mics are transformer output. The transformer will block the DC voltage.

OK. I officially give up. Tried wavosaur another freeward editor (Wavosaur free audio editor with VST and ASIO support) with ASIO support. No joy. Tried Reaper, works. Don't know what is the difference between Cakewalk and Reaper vs. Audacity and Wavosaur.

I have to compile Audacity in order to use ASIO drivers, but I'll give that a shot. I'm also going to give Wavasour a try. I like the Audacity interface though as there's not a whole lot of clutter, and I can see what's being "printed." Thanks again. I'll report back here if I have any success...

There's also "Capture" from the folks in Oregon. Apparently made in Australia by the people that made Zonal. They have 1/4 and 1/2 inch. Price is pretty competitive and it's supposed to be bias and level comparable to 456.

Do you have a schematic? And what PSU did you use vs what you were supposed to use? It seems more likely something else failed causing that diode to fail.

UPDATE: (If anyone is interested) had some weird noise, hard to describe, like crinkling shrinkwrap. Solved by swapping the leads on the capsule. I can't explain that.
