    Mac or PC?

Go find me one for MOTU, Creamware, Tc Powercore, UAD-1, Yamaha,... I know, it will come one day. But until then it is not ready to take over audio.

    vinyl to soundcard?

Regarding setup: if you have a test disc, then by all means use it. I don't have one, but I don't play much vinyl either. But even a simple protractor and a balance like the shure sfg-2 can help you. Think it is best to do this before you use the test disc. Regarding noise floor: if you try to...

    Setting up W2k h/d

There is a tradeoff between cluster size and wasted space on the disk. each file -even if it is just a single byte- takes at least a cluster of space on your disk. If you work with thousends of small files, then you are going to waste lots of space. But if -like me- you have loads of files of...

    vinyl to soundcard?

This depends a lot on the vinyl you get your hands on. I have had some that I found incredibly silent (for vinyl that is). Whatever you transfer: clean it very, very well even before you play it the first time. And check the setup of your turntable.

    Recording PCs and the Internet

Seeing that there seem to be a lot of users that only occasionaly connect their daw to the net for updates and so on, how do they make sure their virusscanner/adware removers/firewall is up-to-date before they go on the net? This would be far easier when the daw is connected permanently to the...

    Linux DAW

I do have a RME digi96/8, but do have some issues with it when running jack (under 2.6.x). No problems with alsa so far. The hammerfall works very well under jack (and 2.4.x). Not yet sure if it is a kernel issue or something else.

    Linux and multitracks

Yes gentoo, alsa, jack, audacity, ardour, rezound, mhwaveedit, gwc, ladspa plugins, qjackctl etc etc... If you run Fedora go check out Planet CCRMA, link in the link above...

    Linux || Mac || PC

You are not comparing OS'es, but a mix of hardware and OS. What you call PC is in fact i386 hardware running windows, and what you call mac is nothing else than ppc hardware running osx. What is *nix for you? Linux running on i386 probably. But there is nothing stopping you from running linux on...

    Recording PCs and the Internet

Everything on a single pc. Using a hardware firewall in the adsl modem. But I do 95% running linux...and when runing w2k there is a second firewall and anti-virus used.

    Linux DAW

First there are distros optimised for audio like Planet CCRMA and Agnula, find them here: http://ccrma-www.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/ http://www.agnula.org/ Those are the best known, but there are others (see last link). The very small distros are usable as audio platform, but you will...

    CD Buring Question

A bit scarce info. But if it plays on some players and not on others, then at least the disc is readable and in the correct format. (Unless you burned it as mp3 and both your home stereo and portable are mp3 compatible.) Some suggestions: - try another application to burn the same .wav files -...

Setting up Cool Edit for Recording

There is a box to check somewhere in the options. Using CEP1.2a it is: "options > settings > general > live update during recording" and also check "options > settings > general > auto-scroll during play and record"

Do you really buy that expensive recording software?

Avoided this thread for a long time. Using linux, and downloading until the modem is red-hot. All legal. So, where do I vote?????

Problem after installing an additional Hard Drive

I know it is solved, but very likely the original HD was set to CS (Cable Select). Came across a similar problem in another dell when installing a second cdrom.

Help?!? Which program is best for recording on an older PIII PC?

Having recorded 6 tracks 16/44.1 while playing back at least as much on a lowly PII300 with 256MB, it definitly should be possible to do this on your pc. I don't like ME either, but it worked with W95, so that should work. - the suggestion of checking if DMA is enabled is an excellent starting...

Who here records something OTHER than music?

The line output of a modem. Not really musical, but interesting to know what it is doing in frequency/time/amplitude and analysing it with all the audio tools. Comes with the job: designing the bloody things.

    Free Software applications

For making a start into linux I would not go with any of those "very small" distros. They are often for a specific targeted use like recovery, network debug etc. Once you start with applications and compile them yourself, you will find that you need the kde development set, the gnome development...

im new to this and dont know where to start

What Meastro seeks is info on what you plan to connect to the pc. More specificly, how much tracks you want to record at the same time, and if you are going to use analog or digital connections to your pc. The reason is to check if you need a soundcard, and if yes, what type to get. For the...

    Free Software applications

1: an rme hammerfall and an rme 96/8, not using the low latency patch (but it shows), gentoo 2.4.25. 2: since feather seems to run from cd I would not recommend it. You will run into trouble installing apps. My whole system is about 6.5GB. Got ardour, rezound, audacity, sweep, ladspa, alsa...

    Digital I/O ?

The spdif standard also specifies a "non-audio" transmission. This is used for the multichannel spdif. In this case, the extra channels are send in a compressed (lossy) format. Adat can transmit higher samplerates by taking channels together. With S-mux you can have 4 96/24 channels instead of...
