    Computer death.

Scsi is speed king, but comes at the price of money, noise and heat. I have 2 10k disks in this pc, and the noise is too much due to both the disks and the fan to cool them. And I'm going to replace them by sata because of the ridiculous prices. But they are reliable and warranty is better...

    Computer system

I would not consider W2003Server a suitable OS for a DAW. Maybe it has a few things turned off by default, but it as just as well a lot more running in background!

Defragging large hard disks mid session

And this says it all. I don't consider something as intensive as defragging low risk. Performancewise, it will depend on the software you use. Most multi-track sessions hammer your disk pretty hard with random r/w, so it won't matter much. Initial loading might improve for a while.

Another tired question about P4 vs Athlon 64

Wouldn't trust sisoft with a bargepole. If you look for a benchmark, go for Spec: http://www.spec.org/

    Dividing Harddrives

If you mean keep it safe from viruses etc, it depends. If you dual boot, but the HD with the audio is visible in both OS's, then it won't help.

ok talk me out of this

If you think you can run linux or osx without a firewall, think again. And if you want to work without the internet, use pigeon post. Sorry for being a bit rude, but you sound both naive and looking for an excuse to buy a mac. You don't want windows, fine why not. You like a mac, again why not...

help to verify new computer purchase...

Software is the big unknown for now. As long as M$ doesn't come out with XP64 (officialy that is) then the rest will not follow. And then it will be the question about 64bit drivers for audio cards. The manufacturers of those are not exactly the fastest driver writers around... Since price...

help to verify new computer purchase...

Correct. It is the memory controller that uses a single channel (so each DIMM sits connected to the same interface) or a dual channel (if you use 2 DIMMs, then each has its own interface, doubling bandwidth). With the AthlonXP and all Intel cpus, the memory controller is a part of the...

buying XP Home full version oem

Beezelbub, going from W98 to anything else is a major upgrade. :) So far I installed XP on 2 machines for friends and it is indeed a good performer. Easy to install and not needing to reboot during install as often as previous versions. But one of those pcs had a bit of troubles, faulty ram...

Difference between these seagate hard drives

One of then supports NCQ or Native Command Queuing. It means that the controller can send several command to the drive, and then the drive will do those commands in the way it thinks is the most efficient. So the controller does not need to wait until a command is finished before sending the...

buying XP Home full version oem

Looks a bit like curing it from the wrong end. After all, some inventive person will find a way to boot without a CD. Like using a USB memory stick or a usb cdrom. Or just bring in a laptop. If your network isn't well protected from within, all the rest is band aid.

    Cracked Software...

Some people just sit on a pole for days and are proud of it... It is not because you don't understand it that it isn't possible. Those crackers do not stand alone (like you do when making music). They have a group feeling and pecking order. Doing what someone else has not done before you makes...

That's the fun of linux. Just put KDE or fwwm or icewm or any other windowmanager you like on it.

    Scsi with eide

Thing is, what is a 20G drive going to do for you? For the price of even the most simple controller you could have a larger ide drive. I do love my scsi setup, but the prices they are asking these days are absurd.

buying XP Home full version oem

All I have heard so far is that the 2.4.x series with a low latency patch is still better than 2.6.x. I run both a gentoo 2.4 and 2.6 (on different pcs) but the 2.6 has more problems so far, like I can't get Jack running without lots of clicks and cracks.

buying XP Home full version oem

Difficult to say without knowing anything what you know about pc's or what you want to achieve. If the rest doesn't care I'll ramble a bit about it, otherwise some moderator just has to split it off. It isn't as easy as turning on a pre-installed pc with windows and installing your favorite...

buying XP Home full version oem

Go take a peek at http://sound.condorow.net/ see if there is anything you can use. There is no need to pay loads to have software (this only to goad some around into the trees :) ). Going to Planet CCRMA is the fastest way to have access to most important audio applications in a more or less...

buying XP Home full version oem

Punished? Going once through those hoops (and those of others steering towards the same idiocy) was enough to make me change to linux. No more of that. This pc stays seldom longer than 3 months in the same config. Now I have at most a recompile to do.

    Cracked Software...

He blew smoke enough into your eyes and I don't know what he was smoking.... Having to re-install your OS and loose data has more to do with how well you tend your pc than with anything else. Learn your tools before you use them! If they let you work on a high powered metal cutting tool, you...

    Mac or PC?

Forgot this in previous post: while the rme drivers are good, they don't support 88.1 or 96. Read the small print on the alsa site. PS: you don't have to convert me, I'm already converted :)
