Do you really buy that expensive recording software?

There is a free alternative for almost everything out there.

    Before saving your recordings????

If you want to go to cd never save as mp3. Certainly not if you want to go on woking on the file later on. Normally I save the raw unchanged data. Make a copy and continue on the copy so I always can go back. If you put the original on a cd or a different disk you have at least a kind of backup.

    Linux recording?

Well, I prefer the separate app way they are going now. I far prefer to have 4 apps running that each does perfectly what it has to do and make them work together without pain. Otherwise you end up with 4 bloated apps that can each 'do all' but nothing well so you still have to use 4 apps and...

    Linux recording?

He didn't ask for a sequencer, he asked for a recording/mixing app. For recording multitrack Ardour is the thing. If you need a sequencer look to Rosegarden. The philosophy of linux is very different of windows. You use the best for each application instead of something that does everything but...

What recording/mixing software are you using?

Mostly Rezound for stereo work. If the need for multitrack would arrise the Ardour. Sometimes still Cool Edit Pro to transfer old projects.

Transferring Analog to my computer (problem...)

Well, you should have at least the windows mixer. Normally it hides behind the little speaker icon next to the clock. Can you play back any files on the pc? Like mp3 or a cd?

Transferring Analog to my computer (problem...)

Open the mixer and then select the "recording" settings. Make sure you have selected the correct input and that the levels are correct.

    Noise Floor

What mic is that indeed? The Samson C01U or some Logitech karaoke desktop mic? That could make a serious difference. The fact that Samson is completely silent about the noise performance makes me wonder as well. Getting a condensor running well from the 5V usb power must not be simple.

That way of low-latency monitoring is more a feature of the soundcard.

Dongles - why do they bother?

Great! My last pc doesn't have a parallel port and doesn't have a floppy. And I don't think there are parallel ports on pci-e either. Now what? And those Hasp keys are fragile. We had one blow up due to static at the office, 4 working days lost because the soft was out of use.

Dongles - why do they bother?

Not a single app I use came with a dongle. I cannot loose them, I have all my ports free for useful stuff, I don't have to register anything. Fine for me. You can do the same, just choose your software to behave as you want it.

Ethics of cracking software you paid for?

I think this is the only long term alternative. All the others will cost money or have to be redone each time they decide to mess with the iLok. If you write a replacement you make a nice statement, help others and the only thing to do afterward is making it better.

how 2 find your soundcard mixer?

What soundcard is it? Some like the rme digixx range do not have a mixer.

    above 0dB but no clipping?

When importing from CD and you see flat tops on waveforms, then the audio is overcompressed. It was done to make the cd sound louder. Why it doesn't register as "over" is that is was first clipped in software (with more than 16bit range). Then the level was normalised to a tad below the 16bit...

    I need help bad!! HELP!!!

I guess he knows how to record because he asks about overdubs, so he already has something inside the pc. Sadly I never work with vocals, so can't someone just explain that little thing to him? Don't assume that because someone asks a question that he has a doubtful copy. Please, this attitude...

    Why I love Adobe Audition...

You have a point I guess. I found a few boxes of 78rpms in the cellar at home. And a lot of very cheap ones at a sale. So I tought "why not?" and bought at another sale a DJ TT. Lots of fun for the winter evenings.

    Why I love Adobe Audition...

A real 78rpm TT, a more or less correct needle and transfering it flat and applying the EQ digital would have brought you even further. I bought a rather cheap DJ turntable some time ago for this. You even get some vari-speed that is useful for those 80rpm discs. But I have to agree, CEP/AA is...

Tips for the n00b and other cool stuff!

Useful, but not limited to vocals. Why? There is no reason not to use whatever you have around is that gives the result you are looking for.
