Linux uses less resources if you don't run X. Forget the "low resources" idea if you are going to run X with Ardour. Maybe if you would run on the command line with Ecasound... I'm not saying that that pc wouldn't be able to run it, but don't expect a large difference between using XP or Linux...

Well, then you would need some sort of control surface connected to your pc. But this makes replacing the mixer by a pc a bit silly, doesn't it? So the only thing you have replaced are some outboard effect boxes by a pc with all its associated risks.

I have heard about this being done with a couple of ceamware cards. But honestly, I would never trust a computer with such a task. The risk of it going down is still too large IMHO.

Same here. I have both a 9652 and a 96/8. When there will be a pci-e card out from rme, it will be on my list. I can honestly say that these cards are the only pc items that have never ever given any trouble. You install them and they work as intended. The best investment I ever made in my pc.
