    Noise Problems

The only thing I can think of is possibly getting a UPS to filter noise from your power. It could be an issue. You should probably have one anyway and they only cost about $60 and will protect a computer much more than a surge protecter, which is more placebo than anything. Besides that I...

    Getting rid of latency?

Well, yes and no. Certainly if your recording program is the only thing running then it will get more CPU time. However, that is never the case. You still have a bunch of services and stuff running. I don't think you can ever knock down your running programs to just one in Windows and you...

quick computer question... about sata HD's

Way back I installed an XP that didn't know about SATA when installing. It would not install because it saw no drive. I had to do the F6 thing. But the important thing is that it wouldn't see the drive without it.

    Getting rid of latency?

Latency is simply the time it takes a generated signal to get to its destination. Put into terms important to us it is the time it takes the signal generated by the plucking of a string or the vibrations in a microphone to travel down the wire, get translated and sampled into digital format...

    Getting rid of latency?

The reason he would choose Linux (with regard to the topic anyway) is because the system can be set up to do real-time processing. The important audio applications that need to be low-latency are built to take advantage of this when available. You don't necessarily need the dual proc though...

what will re installing windows do?

Definately. If you really want to start from scratch. I have seen situations where the windows install disk would blue screen until you formatted the hard drive. I have no idea why, it shouldn't make a bit of difference but it does. You can use your boot install and I forget how but you go...

what will re installing windows do?

There should be a repair option. Still do the backup, windows quite often munges a repair and destroys instead of fix.

    Linux audio restoration?

Audacity has a pencil tool. It makes you zoom in until you see individual samples and then you can move them. So far that is the only suggestion comming from the lau list.

    Linux audio restoration?

Well, if you have LADSPA compiled in and you have the ladspa-cmt there are quite a few plugins, among them may be declick/decrackle...there are some noise generators I know for sure. Freshmeat turned up this: http://users.tkk.fi/~phonkane/xforge/ and this: http://gnoise.sourceforge.net/ I...

Could YOU convert this bedroom to home studio? If so, how?

Where the hell do you get this fiberglass? When I ask for high-density fiberglass I either get dumb looks or, "No, we don't carry that." A construction friend of mine doesn't even know where to get it. It's making me angry, very angry indeed.

    Linux audio restoration?

What is it that you need to do? I don't know anything about audio restoration. If you list off some things that you need to accomplish I may be able to name some programs though. For now have a look at Ardour and JamIn. Ardour is an editor that is much more than Audacity and has a lot of...

Too many DAW choises! Linux an option? Or a mac? Or...

Yeah, there is sometimes a big first step in learning linux. It requires a bit more knowledge of computing in general and a bit more about what you have. Windows will almost install without you having to know anything. Linux is working on that, and Mandrake seems to have it better than the...
