    multitrack recorder or computer

My view on this sorta thing has always been that a pc / mac system well set up will give you more options for you money. For example, i use a mac.G5, Logic 7, and a 10/10 firewire interface as my basic system. And theres very litle i cant do, (and im lucky to have the option on uploading my work...

    Clipping

the compressor is a good idea if you find nothing ealse is working, if you record peaks - thats it, there staying! so using a compressor in mixdown wont get rid of them. Id say ideally, work of your vocal control, then set your input gain with plenty of headroom. Hope that helps.

i wasnt so much asking for suggestions, im pretty much set on what im going to buy (AT 4040). I was more curious what other peoples views on mic, or pre being the priority were, for them. Like i mentioned, for me id much sooner spend all my avalible cash on the mic. For what its worth though...

    mic pre or mic!?

I notice a lot of people always suggesting to people to get a pre, no matter what mic, room, instruments there working with. My weakness in signal chain is the lack of a good LDC. I use a nice firewire 10/10 card with 'get-byable' pre's and will now spend as much as i can scrape togeather on a...

    Normalize every track ?

i Know it brings the peak up to the set level, but in general my mixes are of similar dynamics, therefore it does help keep a consistant level. And in no way am i suggesting this is my idea of mastering!!, but im saying when i produce a recording that i dont intend to have mastered, i normalize...

    Normalize every track ?

? o.k - so people are saying not to normalize at all. Ever the final mix before burning to cd. (if its not being sent to be mastered). I study music at collage with some very talented tutors. My sound recording tutor has always taught me to normalize the final mix. I see why not to if you...

how to mount mics in X-Y formation

Ahhh! i never clicked to that! But say you were producing a recording were you wanted to focus the mics to a smaller area, this would still be considered x - y right, and i assume its also considered a perfectly sensible thing to do!?

how to mount mics in X-Y formation

you say 'X-Y' is at 90 degrees, but what is you want you pick a more direct area, so had the mics set at a narrower angle to one another. Would it not be considered X-Y anymore?

    electronic drum recording question

If your gonna record a electro kit, definatly use real cymbals. The electronic sounds are very noticably unreal. Its getting more popular now to record drums this way, but you will have to play around with mic placment and eq to cut down on the flap of the pads.

Drum Panning Psychology: Audience or Drummer's Perspective?

this may seem a little odd, but to me things seem to sound more natural going from left to right. Maybe this is dew to things like reading and writing working this way ?? i dunno. But when it comes to drums, left to right seems a lot more natural for me. Im not a drummer either, but i do have a...

    Beta 58 and 57

I was looking around on shures web site the other day and noticed that these two mics appear to be 100% identical. There both super cardioid dynamics, with a frequency responce of 50 - 16,000 Hz, both have a mesh and both have the same Frequency response graph. And yet the 57's uses list is 3...

Right so heres the deal, the desk i've been working on doesnt have phase reversal function. The desk is a 24 track soundscraft spirit dest. I asked a tech how i could go about micing up the bottom of the snare, and he told me to make up a cable where pin 3 goes to pin 2 and 2 to 3! So could...
