you don't have to go whole hog, but do get an external d/a/d converter with like 8 inputs. you might not need them today, but if your church undergoes any growth at all, you'll need it soon. my little brother is the sound man at his church, they've got a mackie 24 channel something or other...

just to put my two cents in. I have the Edirol FA-101 which is firewire and it works excellently.

once you get past the midi warning thrown by cakewalk, doesn't it ask you if you want to assign midi outs? cakewalk doesn't follow the midi "suggestion" that you select in the OS, you've got to tell cakewalk what midi ports to use.

i've been using a laptop exclusively for over a year now. my old DAW is now a web app server. i use firewire to a tascam fw-1884 in the studio room, and a edirol fa-101 when i'm out.

tascam fw-1884. rock-solid firewire. came with Giga24 which I could never get to work properly.

but can you move the group without having to unpack the folder? it you have a drum mix tucked into a track folder with the volumes assigned to a group, do you have to display the individual tracks in the folder to make the adjustment or can you just assign the track folder to the same group and...

i think sonar 3 PE has ultrafunk fx. i have ultrafunk R2 and there are some good fx there but if you've got waves, don't worry about sonitus. i'm pretty sure that the track folders stuff wasn't until sonar 4. i'm using sonar 2 as well.
