    compression

why not do both. take your mix to a mastering house (if you are serious about producing something to cell or give to DJs), and also mix it yourself, and then listen to the difference. if you are going to compress the mix use multiband compression with a light ratio and makeup gain so you...

    Quitting

i've thought about quitting the effort of recording music, but its not the music that is causing it. my backup plan (i didn't want to be a starving artist) took off financially (relatively speaking) and recording music didn't. now i'm stuck making money to feed my family and i can't sacrifice...

That new 'multiple wavs on one track' feature in sonar 5

that's in sonar3 as well. and you can choose whether to put the tracks into the original or for sonar to spawn a new track when the loop comes around again. what i do is set the loop points outside of the punch-in points by a measure or two.

    FW-1884 and Cubase SL3

i don't know how it works in cubase but in sonar you have to setup the tascam as a controller even though you have the I/O setup already.

Mic is on in the Studio. All is quiet. What is the dB level?

the noise floor also matters because you are recording it along with your source. even if the source is louder the noise is there and cumulative. everytime you add another track, the noise get recorded too. before i started using a laptop to record, i was averaging around -70db with an AT4033...

Guitar FX pedals and samplers etc.

late response... get the digitech gnx-4 and also midi-up your guitar. then you can have that band-in-a-box thing going, plus turn your guitar into any instrument you want. i've got the digitech gnx1 as my guitar fx processor and the roland gr-33 for midi sounds.

Anyone running a Laptop based mobile recording setup?

dell 9100 inspiron with 512mb ram edirol fa-101 firewire never had a problem. i've recorded band practices and gigs.

    Happy birthday crosstudio...

    Happy birthday crosstudio...

yeh, happy b-day to me. now that i'm using a laptop, i attach my old desktop monitor to it and to the dual monitor thing.

    Sonar 5 Vs Sonar 3

the track folders was the deciding factor for me. comping vocals by muting/unmuting tracks on my fw-1884 and then placing those tracks into a track folder works great. i also like the more advanced routing scheme too. one thing that is really cool to have, but not necessarily worth paying for...

    Recording keyboards direct

i have never recorded a keyboard any other way but direct.

    normalize?

the reason you don't normalize is... its a destructive process. when I appy compression/limiting etc... to a track or to the mix, I'm adding as a plug-in. if 3 months from now something better comes along, I take no loss. if normalizing was non-destructive, I would use it to get all of my...

    samplitude v6.o

are you sure you have samplitude and not samplitude master? i have samplitude master (albeit an old version), and i only get 2 stereo tracks... or are you using a bootleg copy of S6.0

making the drums reall bang! for you hiphop heads

with a 45ms attack you are letting a lot of the drum attack and initial drum sound through, then compressing the middle and tail right? stands to reason that it would sound good for hip-hop because you would have that tight-n-crisp timbaland drum sound, but it would really pump-n-breath...

    Light Pipe

I used to have the frontier design wavecenter. It is a pci card for PC desktops that uses lightpipe. I sold it to get the tascam fw-1884 which uses firewire. the software for tascam is also made by frontier design.

    50 Cent

its not envy. its hatred for a minimalist musical artform where spittin' game is more important than lyrical ability (Jay-z vs. Nas), where 'beefin' with another rapper helps sell records rather than music selling records. for the record, part of 50's sound comes from the natural lisp he has...

    Case for FW-1884

in my opinion the 1884 is way to plastic for carting around without a great case to cart it in. i use the 1884 in the studio and the edirol fa-101 on the road.

How fragile are Tascam mic inputs?

nope they are crappy pieces of plastic. the plastic housing of my #2 cracked.

    Rnp/rnc

i had a mackie 1604vlz pro. when i bought the RNP i figured i'd use it for lead mic stuff and keep using the 1604 for sound canvas and drum machine DI, but i ended up using the RNP for both mic stuff and DI stuff because it is so clean and the top end is so much clearer than my mackie was. I...

    Bit-depth of Sonar's engine

that is my understanding as well. in Sonar5, you can choose 64-bit internal processing.
