I can't write out a whole, finished song

maybe you should be a jingle writer. commercials don't last 30 seconds, so you've got music to spare. just don't be a hack and take commercial songs and drop two or three notes from the melody so you don't get sued.

    ever deal with this problemo...

forgive my ignorance, and i do play guitar (rhythm and bass varieties). i don't understand the point of detuning a whole step unless you are just doing so to get a lower bass sound out of the guitar. if you are doing so because your voice sounds better in that key, then why aren't you just...

What's your main reason for choosing one software package over another?

i've been using cakewalk stuff since it was running over DOS, but I don't stay for the learning curve, I stay because the functionality is easy to figure out without needing to go to 'help' for most of the features. Also the combination of midi and audio capabilities are solid. I recently...

    The Matress Trick Works!!

i've got a Sterns & Foster King which is super thick. I always wanted to see how much sound it would absorb in the studio, but wifee would throw a sh!t fit.

sonar with reason rewire won't stop playing

every time i tried to install GigaStudio and run it... it crashed. so i stopped trying. it can't be an errant piece of midi, because Sonar's END TIME would be based on that last midi element.

sonar with reason rewire won't stop playing

According to Sonar5-PE, my song is 68:03:00 measures long. However, when I have Reason rewired in, Sonar does not stop at 68:03:00 it just keeps playing. Is this a bug, operator error, or a side-effect of having rewired communication between apps?

could any of you suggest an interface for me?

I'll recommend the US122L also. I had the US-428 and the only thing i didn't like about it was the lack of a built-in preamp. tascam and frontier design group work well together.

    REX files in Sonar?

Sonar5 PE comes with RXP. It is a REX player with some filter and amp parameters to boot. after fooling with RXP, i bought Reason, and am now seriously considering ReCycle so its a great intro to their tools and usable to boot.

    Recording Cymbals

if you can do it... do it! if its a studio recording where you'll get a second chance the worst thing that happens is a re-record or using sampled cymbals. i recorded a famous local (Washington DC) jazz musician with his two sons a few years ago. i close mic'd the cymbals because we were in a...

Does 44.1k matter or should I do 96k?

Quote from The Flaming Lips about sample rates: Mixing and mastering the album brought Michael a useful and unexpected piece of wisdom. “We do all our recordings in high resolution, 24 bits, 88.2kHz,” he says. “When we export tracks, it seems like it’s easier on the computer to do the half...

    Control Surface Or Analog Mixer

you got hot firewire coming into your DAW and you want to turn around and send it out to an analog mixer? nah dude! if you have money burning a hole in your wallet and don't just want to deal with mousing everything, get a control surface. i've got the tascam fw-1884 and i like it a lot...

sonar and sample plug-ins (dxi, vst) recommendations please!

I went with Reason. Got it this weekend after playing with a bunch of product demos. spent the first day giving its sucky sequencer a second chance, then imported the midi i was able to put together into sonar and got back to making music. my biggest beef with the sequencer in truth is that...

sonar and sample plug-ins (dxi, vst) recommendations please!

i'm looking for all around sounds... bass, piano, e.piano, organs, strings, horns, including individual string and woodwind instruments. a synth here and there is great, but i usually use those sounds to round out the 'scape rather than being a core sound. i'll add dimension pro to my list. i...

sonar and sample plug-ins (dxi, vst) recommendations please!

I've got Sonar5 PE, and I'm starting to seriously consider DXi/VST. can anyone recommend a particular product and also compare it to the internal sample offerings against roland XV and JV sound canvas and Ensoniq ASR-x drum machine? The ones I've been looking at are Reason, Native Instruments...

Am I the only youngin here ?

You still a baby at 20. That's why young dudes get jerked on their first contract and end up being one hit wonders. They think they are grown, but the 30-50 year old record company execs passing that pen and paper know what time it really is. But you know what? That's OK, cause when you 20...

"How many guitars do you NEED?"

I've got 7 (gave my first love [hohner steinberger clone] to my little brother): A banjo (handed down from my pops 20 years ago) 12-string Yamaha acoustic (thanks again pops) 6-string Yamaha acoustic (drednaught style) 6-string Yamaha classical (with electronics... dumbest of the bunch) Fender...

Mastering in Sonar - Several Stupid Questions

janesaid2me: i disagree with your first sentence. i would say your sampling frequency during recording should be based on how closely you want to interpret the original sound during the record, mix, master process. the medium that you finally use to publish your works has nothing to do with...

Mastering in Sonar - Several Stupid Questions

44khz versus 48khz is basicly a 10% increase in sampling and would theoretically result in a 10% increase in sound reproduction accuracy. if that 10% isn't important to you during the mix/master process, then just record in 44.1khz. i record in 88.2, but mostly because i can.
