I'm thinkin that the USB mic is gonna be noisy. Just guessin but that seems like a weak link in the chain.

I think if I had a norm, which I don't :) , I would say it's light comp, EQ then more comp. But it ends up being what the tune needs. At times, it's the exact opposite. Sometimes I can figure that out pretty quick, other times I go light touch on a bunch of different filters, hate it, throw...

yeah, I was gonna suggest miking the cab too. A 57 up on the grill. Pointing the mic at center is tinny, out towards the edge of the speaker is boomy...somewhere in between is the sweet spot. :) And welcome man. Lots of good folks with good info here.

My bad, I thought that said NO comp on drums. NY comp? Read about it but never used it.

Once in awhile, I'll comp the OH's but 95% of the time, it's kick and snare that get comped.

On a lot of DAW's, you can toggle between whether the metering is pre or post. Also, had a thought that might help if the clipping is audible. Zoom in at the clipped part, copy just the clip and paste it to another track at the same edit point. Flip the phase on the pasted part and see if that...

For a good cheap condenser, look at the MXL V67G. Less than $100.
