Cassettes will be bigger than they are currently 5 years from now in my opinion. The Portastudio thing is kind of a head-scratcher but kinda makes sense too. Small and portable, user-friendly, with analog character. I guess it's similar to the 388 thing ... Some machines just get a buzz going...

Yeh there was always so much grit everywhere else in my setup that I opted for the Chamberlin sounds 90% of the time! They sounded more beautiful and realistic to me.

It was from the Mike Pinder set, but I'm certain it was two different Chamberlins. If I'm remembering right, it was the cellos, and the other must have been 3 violins. I thought I would never forget this stuff, but looks like I'm starting to!

On any analog stereo mix, anything that is panned in the center (or close to the center/not hard L or R) will not sound perfect unless the azimuth (a type of head adjustment) is perfect, which is rare unless the deck has been finely calibrated. Everything else being equal, if you're going to keep just one, keep the 388. I've used both (and heard recordings made on both), and the 388 just sounds better and has a cooler vibe (as you noted). Plus it's more practical -- the 388 is probably worth 4-5 times what the Fostex is. My experience...
