Old tape and the Tascam 388

I don't see why you shouldn't try it out and see if you like it. The bias and operating levels are aren't technically correct but that might work if you're looking for something more noisy and hazy. One of the songs on a record I made was recorded on a 388, on a "wrong" tape (Ampex 641)...

    Reel to Reel to CD

If you're just looking to record to CD, the easiest way might be to pick up a stand alone CD recorder from eBay. Not sure if anyone is making them currently, but plenty are available at fairly low prices. Just make sure to read the manual, and you'll need to buy CD-R Audio discs, which are still...

When will this Portastudio bubble burst?

Cassettes will be bigger than they are currently 5 years from now in my opinion. The Portastudio thing is kind of a head-scratcher but kinda makes sense too. Small and portable, user-friendly, with analog character. I guess it's similar to the 388 thing ... Some machines just get a buzz going...

Some TEAC analog nostalgia on eBay

That setup looks really cool. But I wonder ... Does anyone know how the Teac 70 compares to the 80-8 (terms of sound quality), and how the Model 10 compares to the Model 5? I've heard conflicting reports.

    It Snowed Today in Portland

Yeh there was always so much grit everywhere else in my setup that I opted for the Chamberlin sounds 90% of the time! They sounded more beautiful and realistic to me.

    It Snowed Today in Portland

It was from the Mike Pinder set, but I'm certain it was two different Chamberlins. If I'm remembering right, it was the cellos, and the other must have been 3 violins. I thought I would never forget this stuff, but looks like I'm starting to!

    It Snowed Today in Portland

Yes that's right, thanks for noticing. I gave Chris (the drone filmer) a disc with a few old alternate mixes, and he picked that one.

    It Snowed Today in Portland

I asked him, and the drone has no zoom, so it's pretty steady!

    It Snowed Today in Portland

Thanks ... This is actually an older mix recorded on a Teac 80-8, mixed with a Model 5 to a Tascam 22-2. Just Mellotron, bass, and clavichord.

phase issues when dumping between tape & daw?

On any analog stereo mix, anything that is panned in the center (or close to the center/not hard L or R) will not sound perfect unless the azimuth (a type of head adjustment) is perfect, which is rare unless the deck has been finely calibrated. I wouldn't sweat it in general, but summing to mono...

Life is funny sometimes - Tascam 388 or Fostex 80?

Everything else being equal, if you're going to keep just one, keep the 388. I've used both (and heard recordings made on both), and the 388 just sounds better and has a cooler vibe (as you noted). Plus it's more practical -- the 388 is probably worth 4-5 times what the Fostex is. My experience...

    What happened to Beck ?

Love him or hate him, he was probably objectively the biggest contributor to this forum. Not to discredit all of the other heavyweight contributors :) ... (but I don't think you all would disagree!)

Is tape head degaussing a myth after all?

I've definitely experienced a problem where I was getting a horrible signal to tape, then de-magged and the problem was resolved. My memory of the event was that cleaning alone had not resolved it. I remember thinking de-magging was a subtle thing, and couldn't cause this type of problem (barely...

I'm not gonna flip out ...

What brand of tape and tape type(s) are you using? Some of the older Scotch tapes (maybe 175? can't remember) can squeal and drag. Make sure to clean all guides and every metal part that touches tape ... sometimes you have to really dig in and use your fingernails. Could be the rubber on the...

    "New" Scully

Thanks guys ... Yeh in some ways, I always thought that was my best recording ... but for some reason, I couldn't dial in the 'Oak of the Golden Dream' album on 4-track (a handful of the basic tracks to that project were cut on my old Scully 4-track). I'm not sure where I'm going with the...
