The issue with the points made in the discussion — to me — is not that cassette compares in any way to open reel decks. It doesn’t, not a chance. No disagreement there, and I don’t think you’ll find disagreement anywhere on this board with that uncontroversial opinion. I’m talking about...

    National Audio Video

I think what people like is surely the point ... science doesn't have much to do with it. Cassettes do indeed offer "analog tape sound". :) I'll start the 50-page report and chime in when I'm done.

For a few years, we sold mainly CDs, then a 7" ... the people who buy them definitely listened, as we got feedback, etc. and did not offer downloads for quite some time. :)

    National Audio Video

I have to take issue with some points in your post here ... I know plenty of people who like cassettes, the way that there have always been people who liked vinyl (including prior to the resurgence). You're taking a couple of subsets of the current culture ("hipster"/trend-hoppers, and the...

I think the appeal is that it's an inexpensive way to get a novel physical product out. And, for most people pressing cassettes, I think it does indeed give their all-digital recordings a sheen of imperfect charm. I actually did release one of my group's albums on cassette (used NAC, in fact)...

    Homemade Demagnetizers

I'd guess most Portastudio owners probably rarely or never demag their heads. I used a Porta 05 from 1997-2004 and I don't recall ever using one or noticing any problems as a result.

A cool new gig, and a question or two

Ah ... don't know about Aries, but hey it's free and it's probably alright sounding! I'm not sure about definitive dates (too bad Beck isn't around ... I'm sure some of the info is in the old threads). But in any case, I don't think there's a hard & fast date. If I remember correctly, 1974-1994...

A cool new gig, and a question or two

WOAH that certainly is a deal, especially with the Trident console. There's no way of knowing for sure until you thread up the tape (especially since the boxes might not match the exact reels), but I think generally the ones with the AL address should be good (I know I have a reel that I bought...

    My New Setup

Yeh the 3340 is a pretty serious machine in many ways. I think it sits firmly in the area between a "real" studio machine and a 4-track cassette. I'd bet if someone compiled a list of the records recorded on that deck, the results might surprise people.

trying to decide when and if to use Dolby

NR is a personal choice I'd say ... I tend to avoid it unless tape hiss is getting in the way of the music. If you're bouncing on 4-track cassette, chances are that might be the case. Of course (as mentioned above), if you record with NR on then you want to play back with NR on ... unless you're...

    My New Setup

Ah Thanks, I appreciate it! Actually no digital copies of anything, but I have the tapes of course. If I ever decide to do something with them, I can get ahold of a deck and put something together. Though I don't think most of the songs and recordings are really on the level of the previous...

I heard somewhere that recordings come together when the equipment "disappears". So that would make sense for that scenario!

    My New Setup

Yeh sure is! We did a lot of recordings on the Fostex ... but they ultimately weren't coming together very well in my opinion, so I shelved it. I honestly think the Fostex just didn't have any kind of vibe to it. Though there were certainly other creative and personal factors of considerable...

Can you improve tape replay using 3 head recorder?

I don't know the technical answer to your question, but I think the reality is that "4-track"/overdub capable cassette machines are based around a two-head design. Adding a third head would cause other issues (with alignment, etc.) that would probably cause more audible problems, even if the...

    My New Setup

It is working across the board; I bought it as recently serviced. The only issue I've had is the speed went totally slow, which was resolved by turning the whole machine on it's side then putting it back in position. Not sure what happened there, but figured a belt was slipping and worked its...

    Apex Tube Multi-Track?

If you're talking about locating an Ampex tube 8-track from the '60s ... that would be super expensive and super, super rare and hard to find. Not to mention the size/weight and getting/keeping the thing running. I know someone who has one ... he's a fairly successful musician, and I'm pretty...

Claim that 641/642 similar to 406/407

Best thing to do might be to grab a handful of different tapes on eBay (they're cheap and you can get them in lots sometimes) and try them on your 388. Of course, avoid sticky shed tapes like Ampex 456/406, and Scotch 226 ... but non-backcoated tapes generally will not give you serious trouble...
