Too much tape hiss when recording (R2R)

Are you talking about tape hiss that only occurs while recording, in sync? Or while playing back what you recorded previously?

    I wonder about hardware EQs

I would think, in terms of notable impact on the sound, the order of importance would be: 1 microphone 2 mike preamp 3 tape recorder 4 mixer 5 reverb 6 compressor 7 other outboard/EQ etc

Tascam 244 4 Track is mirroring each track onto the other. Hints?

If the 244 is like the 144, you should have tracks 1+3 panned hard left and 2+4 panned hard right while recording (*and listening with the monitor section, not the faders).

    Multitracking on a Teac A-3340s

I knew someone would show up with the facts ha But if I recall the 3340, the VUs correspond to the output, not input? I would think you’d want a decent visual reference on the VUs. It would also depend on calibration, but I think “if it sounds good, it is good” should apply mostly. If it were...

    Multitracking on a Teac A-3340s

Well ... I respect your opinion, but it certainly beats a comparable Mackie or whatever in my personal experience. The mike preamps are noisy, yeh. But he’s using the mike preamps in the 3340. For mixing a 4 track, I think the Model 2 is good - also considering maybe the OP’s situation ...

    Multitracking on a Teac A-3340s

Yeh if it’s distorting above two, it’s too hot for the Yamaha (I know nothing about the Yamaha, but I’m familiar w the 3340). The Model 2 should be less than $100.

    Multitracking on a Teac A-3340s

Someone smarter than me will likely chime in with a more technically nuanced answer, however: I would set the levels to sound good using the headphone out on the 3340. You’d likely have to consult a manual for what “0” level is supposed to be on the Teac output (and it actually depends on how...

Tricks and secrets of recording on a four-track

Yeh it doesn’t, and IMO noise reduction doesn’t do anything good for sound anyway - part of why you probably do that thing. That thing is basically just high frequency boost, compression, and tape hiss.

Tricks and secrets of recording on a four-track

... also adding Mr Assman - I took a listen to your recordings (just the first two) in the other thread, and I think they sound real cool and I like them. I also think they’d sound real cool done on a Scully 280 4-track ? Also, you asked someone for an example of the “other” way or whatever -...

Tricks and secrets of recording on a four-track

I like White Fence and similar stuff - I don’t think Tim was really going for these things as a particular goal, but it’s just kind of the result of his working methods. IMO the only stuff that sounds authentic are the ones in which the sound kind of happens as a result of the process. That is...

No Record Playback using Tascam 48 & M-1516

Record each track, one at a time, completely bypassing your mixer (plug in a single RCA from your iPhone playing music or something), and monitor from a headphone amp or something more simple, one output at a time. That sound sounds like an adjacent track is overloading in sync or something (not...

Does anyone know when Scotch stopped producing 203 tape??

There are several factors to consider IMO: 1- Technical limitations of the deck -i.e., can it operate with a higher output tape? 2- Long-term stability and availability of 211 3- Aesthetic preference for a particular tape and/or a particular tape’s sound on a particular machine 1- No idea...

    Tascam 388 Prices?

Definitely a better idea to get a 1/2" 8-track and Tascam mixer than a 388 at this point, unless you're rich. A 388 at that price defeats the purpose of a 388.

    Tascam 38 or Teac 3340s

Totally possible on reel, but one of the challenges of the 3340 is the sync response is lousy, so bouncing while overdubbing is not a great option. Panning and routing for bouncing is a function of the mixer, though the 3340 has a pseudo-mixer section. Basically you take the individual outputs...

    Tascam 38 or Teac 3340s

My opinion is the 3340 sounds better but the 38 will be WAY easier to use. You'll definitely get more vibe and sound on the 3340, but bouncing and overdubbing on that deck is a chore. Those sync switches on the front are also finicky in my experience. Way more vibe and punchy sound than the 38...

    Tape to Tape Transfer

I don't have any digital setup, but I have all the tape masters (multis and mixes) ... none have been digitized except the final mixes. I'm slowly rebuilding a multi-track setup to finish the album that we've been working on for over 4 years now. The formats range from 4-track cassette to 1"...
