You will need 64 bit drivers for your interface/hardware. If your interface has 64 bit drivers you are ok.

Reaper is free but from looking at their forum, it doesn't like VST's very much. I currently have cubase, traction, and Sonar 5PE. All are useable but I prefer Sonar 5PE. For free and basic, it looks like Audacity is it.

Silly question but.... are the drivers for the midi device enabled? Even if you have selected a device, you still have to enable the drivers.

Sonar uses 64 bit processing even with plain old XP. There has been no big rush for 64 bit driver support for XP64, so use caution. Frankly, I would simply use XP32 bit until Vista arrives and has some legs. You are not going to find much support out there for 64 bit.

Disable automatic crossfades. The control for this is just above your first track in the toolbars using track view.
