Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

Funny you should mention the balancing kit Tim. I don't see a huge need for it at the moment. It has I/O on DB25 for 16 'Tape In' and the 'Group Outs' twice. I understand the reasons for the I/O it supports but I'm not especially hung up on keeping everything balanced. Once the audio enters the...

    TASCAM Wallpaper

I have the full original Tascam manual. Quite a nice surprise. I didn't think the guy has it. The board even has the JL Cooper Automation upgrade and that manual too! Major score! Both in good shape in their binders.

Ha! I hadn't even noticed your location. Always good to find New Hampshireites! I was totally sold on the two room design, same as my current spot, but yesterday I visited a studio (In MA) that was one large room. Much larger than mine for sure, but he made it work. I hadn't been thinking about...

I hear what your saying. The CR does end up on the small side, 8.5' on the wide end and a bit over 14' long. If I put everything in one room how do I avoid having to track everything thought headphones? With two rooms I can bring things up on the monitors and actually hear what's going to the...

    Early Studio Design Ideas

I'm in the early planning stages of building out a new studio. The space I am planning to use it 20'x20' and I'd like to have it broken up into at least a control room and a live room. Am I crazy for thinking about a design like this? The console pictured is to scale as are other furniture items...

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

On it's way Ghost. Briank, everyone is cutting 9db of high shelf these days, get with it! :) I've not even run audio through it so if someone did or if it's just been turned during all the moving.. we'll never know. Perhaps they were going for the underwater sound-scape... I mentioned above...

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

Pictures!! Alright.. here goes! First up is the whole console in it's glory. These next images are in order of how they appear on the board. They are messy still... Input Controls EQ Aux Monitor Bussing You can see screw holes missing their screws here. The board has a strip of...

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

Quick Shot Well, I did take a quick shot this AM before I left for work.. more to follow of course! This was a shot taken on my iPhone in a very dark basement... I'll break out the SLR when I get home. The JL Copper automation bit seems to be an addin card for the onboard automation...

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

I am so excited! The board is now in my house and is in great shape. It has the aforementioned fuse issue but it seems to be related to a few modules which I will work to sort out over the next couple of days. The automation system is intact. The unit came with two manuals, one for the M3700...

    Tascam M-1b - Connector Explanation

I have two of them at the moment and I don't have any immediate plans to put them in the recording or mixing signal path (My M3500 has plenty of I/O at the moment) but having never modded anything this might make a fun place to start. Not too many things to work on and plenty of space to work on...

Wonderful! Thanks Ghost. Do you know if Tascam every made a recommendation as to how many could be strung together in series?

    Tascam M-1b - Connector Explanation

I first learned about the M-1b via the manual I was reading (for fun, mind you) of the M-520. They mention the M-1b being a great way to easily increase the number of separate headphone mixes you can make. The M-1b is basically an 8 channel unbalanced line mixer but the 8 inputs are 1/2...

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

That would be wonderful Rick. We shall see! What am I looking for? I should check the power rails? Look for anything burned? Bad caps?

    Bouncing

Keep the quality as high as you can, as long as you can. Bounce at 44.1/24 and then when you're done tweaking the stereo mix dither that down to 44.1/16.

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

Isn't that interesting... Starting to make sense. In the picture I linked to you can see the break in the bridge just before the last 8 LED meters.

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

Oh, I understand the logic... but I still want meters on everything! :) A Google image search for the M3700 shows the bridge has four buttons for the meters. Tape In, Aux/Groups, Input.. and an unlabeled one? Off? My short bridge also has 4 buttons.. perhaps they just didn't use that last...

Refurb M3500 into an M3700, or M3700 into an M3500....?

From looking at the channel strips in the M3500, the metering is attached via a connector and not hard to move around. I had been considering moving the meters on the group busses to the last 8 channels of the board. The M3500 I have has 8 LED meters and two VU meters. The VU can show CR...
